Job description

As a valued member of our team, the Yellow Iron Mechanic will be responsible for maintaining and repairing heavy construction and quarrying equipment, often referred to as “yellow iron” machinery. This includes but is not limited to excavators, loaders, dozers, skid steers, and other quarrying machinery. The mechanic ensures the machinery is in safe, working order, performs regular inspections, diagnoses issues, and carries out necessary repairs, preventive maintenance, or replacements. Safety, efficiency, and compliance with industry regulations are key aspects of this role.

Essential Functions:

  • Adhere to and enforce all safety regulations and guidelines pertaining to MSHA, and OSHA.
  • Regularly inspect and maintain heavy construction and quarrying equipment to ensure they are in safe, working order.
  • Diagnose mechanical issues and carry out necessary repairs or replacements on machinery such as excavators, loaders, dozers, skid steers, and other quarrying machinery.
  • Perform necessary repairs and preventive maintenance to address problems promptly.
  • Maintain accurate records of equipment inspections, maintenance, and repairs.
  • Communicate effectively with team members and management about equipment status and needs.
  • Assist in the operation of machinery involved in the quarry and the concrete aggregate production process to ensure production continues in an efficient manner.
  • Read and interpret schematics and technical manuals to effectively and efficiently diagnose and repair heavy machinery.

Non-Essential Duties:

  • Attend all Safety meetings.
  • Clean up work area daily.
  • Washes vehicles and equipment.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position. General days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, hours to be determined. Not eligible for remote work. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand.


Travel Required: Less than 10%


Preferred Education and Experience

  • 3+ years of experience as a mechanic, especially working with heavy diesel equipment.
  • 3+ years of experience with yellow iron equipment, bulldozers, excavators, loaders, etc.
  • Working knowledge of MSHA, OSHA standards and regulations.
  • Experience with hand tools and power tools used in mechanical work.
  • Knowledge of basic tire service and repair techniques.
  • Experience with hydraulics.
  • Ability to read and interpret schematics and technical manuals.
  • Valid Class B and/or C license required.
  • Must be able to read, write and speak English.

The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to sit, walk, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk or hear. The employee must occasionally life and/or move up to 50 pounds.
