What is a yard goat?

A Yard Goat, also known as a yard truck, terminal tractor, or yard jockey, is a specialized vehicle used in warehouses, distribution centers, and freight yards to move semi-trailers within the facility. Yard Goats are not typically used for highway driving; instead, they help position trailers for loading and unloading, improving the efficiency of freight operations. The person operating the Yard Goat is often called a yard driver or yard jockey. This role is essential for keeping logistics hubs running smoothly and ensuring that trailers are in the right place at the right time.

What are some common challenges faced by yard goats during their shifts?

Yard Goats often work in fast-paced environments where managing tight schedules and maneuvering large trailers in confined spaces can be challenging. They must be highly attentive to safety protocols to prevent accidents or equipment damage, especially during inclement weather or night shifts. Additionally, Yard Goats frequently coordinate with warehouse staff, drivers, and dispatchers, requiring strong communication skills to ensure efficient and accurate trailer movements throughout the yard.
