What is yard cleaning?

Yard cleaning refers to the process of removing debris, leaves, branches, trash, and other unwanted materials from outdoor areas such as lawns, gardens, and yards. This service helps maintain a tidy and safe environment while also improving the appearance and health of your outdoor space. Yard cleaning can include tasks like raking leaves, mowing, weeding, trimming shrubs, and disposing of garden waste. Many people hire yard cleaning professionals to save time, ensure thorough results, and keep their property looking its best.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a yard cleaner, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Yard Cleaner, you need physical stamina, attention to detail, and basic knowledge of landscaping or groundskeeping, often supported by experience rather than formal qualifications. Familiarity with yard maintenance tools such as lawnmowers, leaf blowers, trimmers, and sometimes small machinery is typically required. Reliability, time management, and the ability to work independently are important soft skills that help someone excel in this role. These skills are important because they ensure efficient, thorough, and safe maintenance of outdoor spaces, leading to client satisfaction and a well-kept environment.

How to start cleaning up a yard?

Yard cleaning jobs typically begin with assessing the area to identify debris, overgrown vegetation, and clutter. Workers often start by removing trash, pruning plants, mowing the lawn, and raking leaves, using tools like rakes, trimmers, and lawnmowers. Safety equipment such as gloves and protective eyewear is recommended, and some tasks may require basic knowledge of landscaping or gardening techniques.

What is the difference between Yard Cleaning vs Lawn Care?

What are some common challenges faced in a yard cleaning role, and how can they be managed?

Yard cleaning professionals often encounter challenges such as handling heavy debris, exposure to varying weather conditions, and working with a variety of tools and equipment. Managing these challenges involves using proper lifting techniques, wearing appropriate protective gear, and staying hydrated during outdoor work. Additionally, good organizational skills and clear communication with team members help ensure tasks are completed efficiently and safely.

Our services have expanded far beyond portable toilets to include portable bunk houses, campers, flushable restroom trailers, laundry facilities, mobile command centers, light towers, refrigeration units, water storage containers, temporary fencing, and generators.

Our mission is to make life better for our customers by providing superior equipment and services and consistently creating the best "home away from home" experience. As we continue to grow, we remain committed to maintaining a safe work environment for our employees and a family-like culture.

Job Overview:

This role involves regular travel between our Canandaigua and Montour Falls locations. A company vehicle will be provided for all work-related travel.

This role combines yard labor, equipment cleaning, and light maintenance. You will clean, inspect, and prepare our fleet of equipment-campers, restroom trailers, bunk and shower trailers, portable toilets, and related assets-while helping maintain an organized, safe yard and facility. Our customers rely on the quality and cleanliness of our equipment for their events and job sites.

Requirements

Responsibilities:

  • Ability to travel between our Canandaigua and Montour Falls locations on a regular basis.
  • Clean, stock, and prepare equipment (trailers, campers, portable toilets, sinks, etc.) including dusting, sweeping, vacuuming, mopping, restroom cleaning, and ceiling vents.
  • Launder bedding, rugs, curtains, and other soft goods used in units.
  • Check, wash, repair, paint, and store toilets, containers, and other company equipment.
  • Use steam cleaners, pressure washers, and other cleaning equipment for deep cleaning of assets.
  • Perform and document routine inspection activities on units before delivery and upon return, addressing minor repairs as needed.
  • Carry out heavy cleaning tasks and special projects (e.g., deep cleans, event turnarounds, seasonal projects).
  • Assist with retrofitting and preparing special or high-end units.
  • Conduct general facility and yard maintenance, including minor repairs and upkeep of grounds and work areas.
  • Keep the wash pad, supply rooms, and yard areas clean, organized, and compliant with safety and health regulations.
  • Monitor and report materials and supplies used throughout the day; restock and maintain supply rooms.
  • Notify management of equipment issues, needed adjustments, or repairs.
  • Operate a forklift for loading and unloading assets (toilets, sinks, trailers, etc.) and occasionally operate a service truck as needed.
  • Follow all company safety rules and health regulations, use required PPE, and promptly report hazards and incidents.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Valid Driver's License (required).
  • At least one (1) year of cleaning experience, preferably in a commercial or industrial setting.
  • Proven experience as a cleaner with the ability to handle cleaning equipment and machinery (vacuums, carpet cleaners, pressure washers, etc.).
  • Knowledge of cleaning chemicals, supplies, and safe handling practices; familiarity with Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS/SDS).

Skills:

  • Strong customer service mindset and pride in delivering clean, well-presented equipment.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team and communicate clearly with coworkers and supervisors.
  • Good time management, reliability, and basic decision-making/problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to obtain OSHA Forklift Certification within 90 days of employment (training provided).

Physical Requirements:

  • Stand for long periods and walk for up to 30 minutes at a time without exertion.
  • Sit while operating equipment (e.g., forklift) and stand while servicing products.

  • Health Savings Account (HSA), if applicable.
  • Paid time off and paid holidays.
  • Employee assistance program.
  • Opportunities for professional development and advancement.
