Job Description

The Physical Chemistry unit seeks a Surface Analysis Scientist to support materials characterization for the Naval nuclear propulsion program. This position serves as the site's primary surface analysis expert, responsible for developing and executing Auger Electron Spectroscopy (AES) and X ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) capabilities. The successful candidate will collaborate with local colleagues and periodically engage with surface scientists at other NNL sites. The successful candidate will operate, maintain, and improve AES and XPS systems to support material investigations for Naval nuclear propulsion technology, develop analytical approaches and provide surface analysis expertise to evaluate surface composition, chemical states, contamination, corrosion, and degradation of materials. The expectation of this role is that they deliver high quality data, interpretations, and recommendations supporting materials development and component analysis that is meticulously documented and clearly communicated via written reports and presentations to a multidisciplined team.

Required Combination of Knowledge and Skill
Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university in a related technical, engineering or science field and a minimum of 6 years of relevant experience; or Masters degree from an accredited college or university in a related technical, engineering or science field and a minimum of 4 years of relevant experience; or Doctorate degree from an accredited college or university in a related technical, engineering or science field and a minimum of 1 year of relevant experience; or Currently a Senior Reactor Training Engineer, Refueling Engineer, or Field (RPCO) Engineer at the Company.
Preferred Skills

* Demonstrated experience operating AES and/or XPS systems, including method development and advanced data interpretation.
* Strong understanding of surface chemistry, thin films, corrosion, oxidation, and contamination of engineered materials.
* Ability to work independently as the on site surface analyst and effectively engage with cross functional and remote teams.
* Strong communication, organization, and problem solving skills.
* MS or PhD in Chemistry, Materials Science, Physics, Chemical Engineering, or a related field (BS with extensive experience considered).
* Experience supporting Department of Energy (DOE), Department of Defense, or Nuclear Navy programs
* Background in production engineering or practical experience supporting fleet operations
* Familiarity with ceramics, metallic alloys, and other materials relevant to nuclear environments
* Demonstrated ability to lead multidisciplinary technical initiatives or projects

Pay Range
$95,700.00 - $149,600.00 annually
Salary information provided is a general guideline only. Annual salary is based upon candidate experience and qualifications, as well as market and business considerations.
