What is a Xilinx FPGA developer?

A Xilinx FPGA Developer is a specialized engineer who designs, develops, and implements digital systems using Xilinx Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs). Their work involves writing hardware description language (HDL) code, simulating and testing designs, and optimizing systems for performance and efficiency. They often use tools like Vivado or ISE and work closely with hardware and software teams to integrate FPGA solutions into larger products. This role is crucial in industries such as telecommunications, aerospace, automotive, and embedded systems, where high-speed, customizable hardware is needed.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Xilinx FPGA developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Xilinx FPGA Developer, you need strong skills in digital design, VHDL/Verilog programming, and a solid background in electrical engineering or a related field. Experience with Xilinx Vivado, ISE, and associated toolchains, as well as familiarity with simulation and debugging tools, is typically required. Analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective teamwork are crucial soft skills for this role. These competencies ensure the development of reliable, optimized FPGA solutions and effective collaboration within engineering teams.

What are some typical challenges faced by a Xilinx FPGA developer when integrating hardware and software components?

Xilinx FPGA Developers often encounter challenges when bridging the gap between hardware design and software development, particularly during system integration. Debugging timing issues, ensuring compatibility between custom logic and existing IP cores, and optimizing resource utilization are common hurdles. Collaboration with embedded software engineers and hardware teams is crucial to achieve seamless integration, and effective communication helps address issues such as synchronization, data throughput, and real-time processing requirements. Familiarity with Xilinx toolchains and a proactive approach to testing can greatly ease these challenges.

What is the difference between Xilinx Fpga Developer vs FPGA Engineer?

Key responsibilities

  • Design, develop, integrate, and test FPGA-based processing solutions for RF and SDR systems.

  • Develop FPGA designs using VHDL, Verilog, and/or SystemVerilog in AMD/Xilinx Vivado.

  • Support FPGA board bring-up, FPGA debugging, timing closure, interface troubleshooting, hardware validation, and laboratory integration activities.

Job description

Qualis LLC is seeking an experienced FPGA/Digital Design Engineer to develop high-performance FPGA solutions for advanced RF and software-defined radio systems. The ideal candidate is a hands-on AMD/Xilinx FPGA developer with strong experience using Vivado, PetaLinux, Tcl scripting, board support packages, and FPGA reference designs.

This role focuses on taking system requirements into practical FPGA implementations, integrating vendor and custom reference designs, and supporting the development of advanced SDR, sensing, communications, electronic warfare, and PNT technologies. The successful candidate will work closely with RF, software, systems, and hardware engineers to deliver integrated prototype and production solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, integrate, and test FPGA-based processing solutions for RF and SDR systems.
  • Develop FPGA designs using VHDL, Verilog, and/or SystemVerilog in AMD/Xilinx Vivado.
  • Develop and optimize real-time digital signal-processing functions, data movement architectures, digital receivers, exciters, channelizers, and processing pipelines.
  • Integrate and customize AMD/Xilinx FPGA reference designs, IP cores, board support packages, and development platforms.
  • Develop and maintain Tcl scripts to automate Vivado project creation, design configuration, synthesis, implementation, bitstream generation, and hardware handoff workflows.
