The City of Wylie's award winning Smith Public Library is seeking a customer services oriented individual to work as a Reference Assistant in the Adult Services division. This position is Texas Municipal Retirement System (TMRS) eligible. The selected applicant will assist in reference services, shelving, and the planning and implementation of programs.
When assigned to Adult Services: Provides stellar customer service at the help desk. Supports librarians on the adult services team with programming, displays, and promotional materials.
Supervision is provided by the department supervisor.
Position Schedule:
Monday & Thursday - 2:15pm to 8:15pm
Friday & Saturday - 11:15am to 5:15pm
When off the 3rd Saturday of the month:
Monday 11:15 am to 8:15 pm (8 hours)
Thursday 11:15 am to 8:15 pm (8 hours)
Friday 9:15 am - 5:15 pm (8 hours)
Essential Job Functions
  • Provides customer service at a public service desk on a daily basis, in a proactive and friendly manner.
  • Communicates with library users regarding questions for information, and interpreting and explaining library policy and procedures.
  • Provides reader's advisory.
  • Shelves and sorts library materials.
  • Assists with any library service where help is needed such as at computers, gaming systems or anywhere in the library.
  • Assists patrons with locating information in print collections and online electronic resources.
  • Assists in the maintenance of files related to programming.
  • Participates in outreach activities to community organizations, schools, retirement centers, or other groups to promote the use of the library.
  • Provides departmental clerical support using typical office machines.
  • Informs supervisor of all work related activities.
  • Performs as a responsible steward of the public trust and strives for excellence in public service, enhancing the quality of life for all.
  • Acts in a civil, respectful manner at all times to management, co-workers and others.
  • Performs other duties as may be assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements
Bachelor's Degree. Work history in customer service. Customer service experience in a library preferred. Completion of National Incident Management System (NIMS) training courses as outlined by Emergency Management after hire.
