What is a WSET?

A WSET job typically refers to roles in the wine, spirits, or hospitality industry that require certification from the Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET). These jobs can include sommeliers, wine educators, sales representatives, buyers, or consultants. WSET certification demonstrates expertise in wine and spirits, helping professionals advance their careers in the beverage industry.

What types of organizations hire individuals with WSET qualifications, and what are their daily responsibilities?

Professionals with WSET qualifications are commonly hired by wine retailers, restaurants, hotels, distributors, wineries, and educational organizations. Daily responsibilities may include conducting tastings, providing recommendations to customers or clients, managing inventory, training staff, and hosting educational seminars or events. You might also work closely with sales teams, sommeliers, or marketing departments to enhance customer experience and drive business goals. This dynamic role often involves both customer-facing activities and behind-the-scenes work, offering variety and growth opportunities within the wine and spirits sector.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the WSET position, and why are they important?

To thrive in a WSET professional role, a deep understanding of wines and spirits, sensory evaluation, and strong product knowledge are essential, typically supported by WSET Level 2 or Level 3 certification. Familiarity with wine service tools, inventory management systems, and industry-standard point-of-sale systems is often required. Standout soft skills include excellent communication, customer service orientation, and the ability to educate a wide range of audiences. These skills ensure you can expertly advise customers, teach courses, and contribute to sales or hospitality environments in the wine and spirits industry.

Job description

SOMMELIER — LITTLE MOUNTAIN | MONTECITO, CA

Little Mountain is a wood-fired kitchen rooted in Montecito's coastal culture, added to the California Michelin Guide within our first six months of opening. We proudly partner with global and local wineries, breweries, and distilleries as well as farmers, ranchers, and fishermen to source organic and biodynamic ingredients, honoring those relationships through traditional technique and genuine care. Our Spanish Colonial dining room is designed to feel like a home: warm, considered, and unhurried.

We're looking for a passionate Sommelier who loves connecting people to wine.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

  • Guide guests through our wine list with warmth, knowledge, and genuine enthusiasm — making thoughtful recommendations and building real connections at the table
  • Drive wine sales through active engagement, pairing suggestions, and a natural ability to read what each guest is looking for
  • Execute wine service with precision and care: opening, decanting, and presenting every bottle the way it deserves
  • Support the Beverage Director with restocking, cellar organization, and inventory counts
  • Contribute to the ongoing wine education of the dining room team through tastings and line-up support
  • Stay deeply current on our list and wine trends

WHO YOU ARE

  • Genuinely passionate about wine and always curious to know more
  • A natural with guests and warm, approachable, and skilled at calibrating your approach to the table in front of you
  • A confident, enthusiastic salesperson who finds real joy in the match between person and bottle
  • Organized and detail-oriented, with the same care for the cellar as for the guest
  • A team player who shows up for the whole restaurant and the beverage team equally

EXPERIENCE

  • 1-2+ years of sommelier or wine-focused service experience in a fine dining or upscale setting
  • Strong knowledge of wine regions, varietals, producers, and food and wine pairing
  • Experience with wine and beverage service including proper opening, decanting, and glassware
  • Wine certification through the Court of Master Sommeliers, WSET, or equivalent preferred but not required
  • Active California RBS certification required

BENEFITS

  • Hourly wage + tips
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance above industry standard
  • Ongoing education, tastings, producer visits, and field trip opportunities
  • A team that takes the work seriously and each other warmly
