What is a WSET?

A WSET job typically refers to roles in the wine, spirits, or hospitality industry that require certification from the Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET). These jobs can include sommeliers, wine educators, sales representatives, buyers, or consultants. WSET certification demonstrates expertise in wine and spirits, helping professionals advance their careers in the beverage industry.

What types of organizations hire individuals with WSET qualifications, and what are their daily responsibilities?

Professionals with WSET qualifications are commonly hired by wine retailers, restaurants, hotels, distributors, wineries, and educational organizations. Daily responsibilities may include conducting tastings, providing recommendations to customers or clients, managing inventory, training staff, and hosting educational seminars or events. You might also work closely with sales teams, sommeliers, or marketing departments to enhance customer experience and drive business goals. This dynamic role often involves both customer-facing activities and behind-the-scenes work, offering variety and growth opportunities within the wine and spirits sector.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the WSET position, and why are they important?

To thrive in a WSET professional role, a deep understanding of wines and spirits, sensory evaluation, and strong product knowledge are essential, typically supported by WSET Level 2 or Level 3 certification. Familiarity with wine service tools, inventory management systems, and industry-standard point-of-sale systems is often required. Standout soft skills include excellent communication, customer service orientation, and the ability to educate a wide range of audiences. These skills ensure you can expertly advise customers, teach courses, and contribute to sales or hospitality environments in the wine and spirits industry.

Job description

Bacchus Management Group is opening a new restaurant, The Old Post Office, in Burlingame, California. We’re looking to add a full-time sommelier to help oversee beverage operations, with a very large wine program consisting of roughly 4,000 selections. The start date would be mid July, with an expected opening day of the restaurant in early September. The restaurant will be making a sincere effort to achieve Michelin Star success as well as having a wine list that we hope will garner attention from Wine Spectator.

Ideal candidates should have serving/bartending experience in fine-dining, management experience, and be in pursuit of additional certification through the Court of Master Sommeliers and/or WSET. This position would be particularly well suited to a sommelier with interest in more hands-on role in overseeing a beverage program.

  • Annual, all-expenses-paid European travel opportunities to visit historic wine-growing regions.
  • Full reimbursement for successful passes of CMS Introductory and Certified examinations.

  • Compensation incentives for successful passes of the CMS Introductory, Certified and Advanced examinations with commensurate recognition of WSET levels.
  • Sales Commission percentage in addition to a competitive base salary.
  • $125 quarterly educational reimbursement allowance for books, magazine subscriptions, GuildSomm membership etc.
  • 401k with company contribution for all employees (4% match on 5% contribution.)
  • Monthly Cell-phone reimbursement.
  • Two weeks PTO for full-time positions, with an additional day for every year of tenure.
  • Medical, Dental and Vision Coverage.
  • Wine at cost.
  • Relocation stipend for the right candidate.

The Bacchus Management Group provides an ideal environment for service professionals interested in advancing their careers and working with a passionate hospitality team.

If you have interest in joining our wine team and have any further questions, please respond with a resume and/or cover letter. Qualified candidates will be contacted immediately for an interview. You must be available to work weekends and have a passion for hospitality.
