CTL Writing Support offers skilled, sensitive and supportive writing instruction designed to foster student skills and confidence in order to enable students to reach their full potential. Our approach to writing instruction is informed by our understanding of writing as a complex ability that is continuously learned and relearned in relation to changing contexts and purposes. We acknowledge that educational institutions, including academic writing instruction, have supported oppressive colonial systems. We also believe that the clear and informed thinking associated with writing is essential to the process of change. Job Title: CTL Writing Support Writing Instructor

Number of Positions: Three (3)

Size of Appointment (hours): Up to 250 hours each  

Session: Fall 2026/Winter 2027

Minimum Qualifications: 

Excellent written and oral communication skills;
A completed Master's degree;
In-person and online experience teaching or tutoring university-level academic writing one-on-one;
Experience with writing across the full range of disciplines taught at the University of Toronto Scarborough (including Humanities, Social Sciences, Management, Computer and Mathematical Sciences, Psychology, Life Sciences, and Physical and Environmental Sciences);
Experience working with a diverse group of students;
A scholarly approach to one-to-one writing instruction, including familiarity with best practices;
Demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion. 

Preferred Qualifications:

A completed PhD or PhD coursework;
Awareness of recent developments and issues in the field of writing studies, in particular familiarity with scholarly literature around pedagogies of care, and decolonial and/or anti-racist approaches to writing instruction;
Training in second-language instruction at the university level;
An academic background in Physical Sciences, Life Sciences, or Social Sciences.

Relevant Criterion:

Previous experience is the more relevant criterion than the need to acquire experience in respect of this posted position. 

Description of duties:

Writing instructors teach critical analysis, critical reading, modes of argument, research skills, and methods for reading, planning, drafting and revising texts. The chief duty of instructors in CTL Writing Support is to provide one-to-one instruction to students in all disciplines and at all levels of language proficiency. Writing instructors may also be asked to respond to student questions, facilitate course-based writing retreats, facilitate small groups of students in discussing and reviewing writing, develop pedagogical materials, collaborate with discipline-based instructors to develop and teach tailored workshops on aspects of academic writing, and support other Writing Support programming.
For Fall 2026-Winter 2027, writing instruction will be offered both in-person and online using WC Online. Instructors should be prepared to come to campus for in-person hours a minimum of one day per week. If they choose to work from home for remaining hours, they should have access to a stable, high-speed internet line, a computer with a working webcam and microphone and a quiet workspace. 

Size of Appointment (Hours):

Three positions for up to 250 hours each (Fall and Winter terms - September 8, 2026 to April 30, 2027) 

Hours will be aligned with assignment deadlines, and instructors may be asked to work evenings or occasional weekends.

Writing Instructor II-Long Term: $62.14 + vacation pay
Writing Instructor II-Priority: $62.48 + vacation pay
Writing Instructor II-Priority Long Term: $63.96 + vacation pay

This job is posted in accordance with the CUPE 3902 Unit 3 Collective Agreement.

It is understood that some announcements of vacancies are tentative, pending final course determinations and enrolment. Should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.

Preference in hiring shall be given to persons holding the rank of Writing Instructor 2  and Writing Instructor 2 (Priority) who have been advanced to that status in the hiring Writing Centre (or, if advanced in another Writing Centre, who have additionally been employed for the required minimum number of hours in the hiring Writing Centre) in accordance with Article 16:11 of the CUPE 3902 Unit 3 collective agreement.
