Job description

Job Title: Writer and Author-Print Journalism
Location: Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, Bethesda, Maryland
Employment Type: Full-Time, On-Site
Anticipated Start Date: December 2026
Position Summary
GD Resources is seeking an experienced Writer and Author to develop engaging, accurate, and mission-focused content for Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. The Writer will identify and develop stories about medical innovation, research, patient care, military medicine, staff achievements, and organizational initiatives.
The successful candidate will manage stories from initial idea through research, interviews, writing, multimedia coordination, editing, approval, and publication.
Key Responsibilities
  • Research and write feature stories, news articles, press releases, newsletters, web content, speeches, talking points, briefings, and special publications.
  • Develop and manage an editorial calendar for print and long-form digital content.
  • Proactively identify story ideas that support Walter Reed's strategic communication priorities.
  • Conduct professional and sensitive interviews with patients, families, medical personnel, researchers, senior leaders, and other stakeholders.
  • Turn complex medical and scientific information into clear, accurate, and engaging content.
  • Coordinate with editors, graphic designers, photographers, videographers, public affairs staff, and subject-matter experts.
  • Develop messaging for internal and external audiences.
  • Support media inquiries, interviews, visits, press events, and community-engagement activities.
  • Monitor relevant media coverage and contribute to external communication reports.
  • Write and edit content in accordance with AP Style and applicable command guidance.
  • Submit products through the required public affairs review and approval process.
  • Protect HIPAA, PHI, privacy, and other sensitive information, particularly when interviewing patients and families.
  • Meet daily, weekly, and urgent or ad hoc deadlines.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, English, or a related field.
  • At least five years of journalism or professional-writing experience.
  • Portfolio of published articles demonstrating interviewing, reporting, narrative storytelling, and long-form writing capabilities.
  • Excellent research, writing, editing, and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage several stories and deadlines simultaneously.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build trust with interview subjects.
  • Working knowledge of AP Style.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain required Government facility, CAC, network, and background-investigation access.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in healthcare journalism, military public affairs, federal communications, or another regulated environment.
  • Experience covering medical research, patient stories, military medicine, or executive leadership.
  • Knowledge of HIPAA and PHI safeguards.
  • Experience supporting media relations, crisis communications, or public events.

Work Requirements
The position is primarily performed on-site, Monday through Friday. Occasional after-hours support may be required for major events, urgent assignments, or contingency operations.
