Job description

Role Title: Senior DoD Staff Writing SME

Role Type: Contractor

Location: Remote (US Only)

micro1 is engaging Senior DoD Staff Writing SMEs to contribute expert knowledge and writing skills to a pivotal customer project. In this role, you'll apply your expertise to help train next-generation AI systems. Your work will shape how models learn, reason, and perform through high-quality, real-world input. No prior experience in AI is required - your domain knowledge is what matters.

Scope of Work
  1. Develop and provide well-structured prompts, input artifacts, and golden responses for diverse Department of Defense (DoD) staff writing tasks such as WARs, SITREPs, executive summaries, and performance reports.
  2. Create grading guidelines to evaluate and score AI-generated outputs, ensuring alignment with DoD standards and expectations for accuracy, tone, and compliance.
  3. Produce authentic report artifacts reflecting the style, structure, and language used in real-world DoD documentation across a range of operational and administrative scenarios.
  4. Contribute to the design and review of test materials that evaluate AI capabilities in summarizing and reporting tasks typically performed by federal personnel.
  5. Engage in feedback cycles to refine prompts, responses, and grading rubrics based on project needs and model performance.
  6. Leverage back-office and communication experience to simulate weekly, monthly, and ad hoc reporting formats familiar to federal organizations.
Preferred Qualifications
  1. Former federal contributor for the U.S. Department of War (Department of Defense), with at least 3 years of relevant experience.
  2. Experience producing key reporting artifacts such as Weekly Activity Reports (WARs), Situation Reports (SITREPs), executive summaries, and similar standard formats.
  3. Background in one of the six branches of the U.S. military, with diversity of experience across different roles and units preferred.
  4. Demonstrated excellence in written and verbal communication, with clear attention to detail and audience-appropriate language.
  5. Familiarity with back-office tools and processes, including the production and formatting of PowerPoint briefings, memos, Excel summaries, and related documentation.
  6. Strong analytical skills for evaluating and providing constructive feedback on AI-generated staff writing outputs.
  7. US-based with an understanding of federal compliance, reporting requirements, and DoD-specific terminology and workflows.
