Report to          Coordinator of the Writer's Studio

Department     Library - Academics

FLSA Status      Hourly, Non-Exempt


JOB PURPOSE

To assist students of Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and Spurgeon College to develop success oriented writing skills.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Create an inviting environment to enable students to grow and mature in their writing capabilities
  • Assist students at any stage of the writing process through both on-campus and online conferences
    • answer writing-related questions
    • help students learn and practice writing strategies
    • Connect students to the Midwestern style guide
    • direct students to outside resources, 
    • coach students through critiquing to strengthen their work in areas of ideas, structure, flow, etc.
  • Maintain detailed records of each student conference
  • Assist with writing workshops and special events
  • Follow the Writer's Studio philosophy and process

QUALIFICATIONS / REQUIREMENTS

MUST BE CURRENT STUDENT OF MBTS OR SPURGEON COLLEGE, AND

MUST QUALIFY FOR THE FEDERAL WORK STUDY PROGRAM VIA FAFSA


Including, but not limited to

  • Christian with high integrity, currently pursuing a relationship with God
  • A Bachelor's degree or 100 Accelerate program hours successfully completed.
  • A high level of writing competence (including a strong knowledge of the writing process, effective structure and argumentation, appropriate use of sources, research skills)
  • This is not a remote position.  Residency on the Midwestern campus or in the Kansas City Metropolitan area is required.
  • Strong verbal coaching and interpersonal skills (the ability to express ideas and answer questions clearly, encourage student success, ask questions, and offer suggestions in a clear and constructive manner)
  • Computer skills to enable conferencing effectively with students through e-mail and/or meeting programs, such as Teams
  • A servant leader with a strong desire to help fellow students become stronger and more confident writers
  • Able to multi-task, analyze workload, and prioritize as necessary for the benefit of the department
  • Able to take the initiative to complete the duties of the position without the need of direct supervision.
  • Able to learn and utilize new skills and information to improve job performance and efficiency. Must be able to work independently, as well as a part of a team
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Must show a desire and willingness to learn
  • Must possess a positive attitude
  • Able to pass background screening, including driving record
  • Eligible to work in the United States

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Share office environment
  • Varying shifts - working 5 - 10 hours per week
  • Extensive phone and computer work required.

PHYSICIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Frequently required to sit or stand for periods of time at desk or computer station
  • Occasionally required to stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms.
  • Able lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
