Introduction

The Maryland Department of Veterans and Military Families\r\n(DVMF) was created by the State Legislature in 1999 as an executive agency with\r\nthe mission of assisting veterans, active duty service members, their families\r\nand dependents, in securing benefits earned through military service.\r\nThe Cemetery Office Secretary serves as the principal\r\nadministrative and operational support position for the State Veterans\r\nCemetery, ensuring the efficient coordination of burial services, maintenance\r\nof official records, compliance with State and Federal regulations, and\r\ndelivery of exceptional customer service to veterans, their families, funeral\r\nservice providers, and the public. The position manages sensitive eligibility\r\nand interment documentation, coordinates daily burial operations, maintains federally\r\nmandated reporting systems, and provides administrative support essential to\r\nthe cemetery's mission of honoring veterans through dignified interment and\r\nperpetual care. In the absence of cemetery management, the incumbent provides\r\noperational oversight to ensure continuity of cemetery services and the\r\nsuccessful execution of daily operations.\r\n

Main Purpose of Job

The Cemetery Office Secretary serves as the principal\r\nadministrative and operational support position for the State Veterans\r\nCemetery, ensuring the efficient coordination of burial services, maintenance\r\nof official records, compliance with State and Federal regulations, and delivery\r\nof exceptional customer service to veterans, their families, funeral service\r\nproviders, and the public. \r\nThe position manages sensitive eligibility and interment\r\ndocumentation, coordinates daily burial operations, maintains federally\r\nmandated reporting systems, and provides administrative support essential to\r\nthe cemetery's mission of honoring veterans through dignified interment and\r\nperpetual care. In the absence of cemetery management, the incumbent provides\r\noperational oversight to ensure continuity of cemetery services and the successful\r\nexecution of daily operations.\r\n

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or\r\npossession of a high school equivalency certificate.\r\nExperience: Three years performing secretarial or clerical\r\nwork involving typing duties.\r\nNotes:\r\n1. Additional secretarial or clerical experience may be\r\nsubstituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.\r\n2. Thirty credit hours with a major in secretarial science\r\nor office technology from an accredited college may be substituted at the rate\r\nof thirty credits for one year of experience for up to two years of the\r\nrequired experience.\r\n3.Candidates\r\nmay substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a\r\nnon-commissioned officer in Administration classifications or Administrative,\r\nClerical, or Office Services specialty codes in the Administrative Support\r\nfield of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.\r\n

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Two years of experience providing administrative support\r\nand customer service in a cemetery, funeral home, healthcare, veterans'\r\nservices, or other public-facing environment involving confidential records and\r\nsensitive customer interactions.\r\nOne year of experience reviewing applications, maintaining\r\nelectronic records, or processing case files while applying established\r\npolicies, procedures, or regulatory requirements.\r\nOne year of experience using computerized database, case\r\nmanagement, or records management systems to accurately enter, maintain, and\r\nretrieve information.\r\nOne year of experience coordinating schedules,\r\nappointments, meetings, events, or services involving multiple internal and\r\nexternal stakeholders while meeting established deadlines.\r\nOne year of experience preparing professional\r\ncorrespondence, reports, spreadsheets, and other administrative documents using\r\nMicrosoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook), including responsibility for\r\nmaintaining accurate records and supporting daily office operations.\r\n

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Demonstrated ability to accurately type on a keyboard of a personal computer at a minimum of forty words per minute may be required, depending on the specific requirements of the position. \r\n
