Job description

The University of Virginia Department of Pediatrics and Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition invites applications for a clinical faculty position at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor level for a board‑certified/board‑eligible Pediatric Gastroenterologist with certification in Pediatric Transplant Hepatology. The successful candidate will join a highly collaborative and nationally recognized multidisciplinary team dedicated to advancing pediatric hepatology and liver transplantation at UVA Health Children’s.

This position is ideal for a motivated clinician‑leader interested in expanding a growing pediatric liver transplant and hepatology program through excellence in clinical care and program development. Opportunities for tenure‑track consideration are available for candidates with aligned academic interests and experience. Rank and compensation are dependent upon qualifications.

The Pediatric Liver Transplant Program at UVA Health Children’s is a collaborative program with University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) that provides comprehensive multidisciplinary care for children with acute and chronic liver disease. The program has established expertise in pediatric liver transplantation, including living donor transplantation, and is well positioned for continued growth in transplant hepatology and metabolic liver disease. The successful candidate will play a central role in guiding the future growth and strategic vision of the program, including expansion of clinical programs, outreach efforts, and research infrastructure.

Responsibilities
  • Serve as Medical Director of the Pediatric Liver Transplant Program, leading clinical, regulatory, and quality oversight in collaboration with transplant surgery leadership, transplant administration, and the multidisciplinary transplant team.
  • Oversee transplant quality metrics and outcomes, participate in OPTN/UNOS‑related activities, and collaborate in strategic planning and program growth initiatives.
  • Develop quality improvement and patient safety efforts related to pediatric hepatology and transplantation.
  • Participate in shared divisional call coverage, inpatient consultative and attending services, pediatric hepatology and transplant clinics, outreach clinics, and multidisciplinary transplant‑related care.
  • Engage in teaching and mentorship of medical students, residents, and fellows within the Division’s ACGME‑accredited Pediatric Gastroenterology Fellowship Program.
  • Leverage experience or strong interest in clinical and translational research, particularly to expand the Division’s hepatology and transplant‑related research infrastructure.

The Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition includes eight faculty and five nurse practitioners. Within the division there is expertise in inflammatory bowel disease, eosinophilic gastrointestinal disorders, disorders of gut‑brain interaction, aerodigestive disorders, intestinal rehabilitation, nutrition, global health, and medical education. The Division serves as one of the leading pediatric digestive disease programs in the Commonwealth and region, supported by dedicated nurse care coordinators, psychologists, dietitians, social workers, clinical research coordinators, and administrative staff.

Qualifications
  • M.D. or D.O. degree.
  • Board‑certified/board‑eligible Pediatric Gastroenterologist with certification in Pediatric Transplant Hepatology.
  • Eligible for tenure or non‑tenure tracks at Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor rank.

If you are a clinician‑leader passionate about pediatric hepatology and transplantation, we encourage you to apply.

The University of Virginia is an equal‑opportunity employer. All interested persons are encouraged to apply, including veterans and individuals with disabilities.
