What is a Workforce Disruption RN?

Workforce Disruption RNs are registered nurses who provide temporary clinical support to healthcare facilities experiencing staffing shortages due to strikes, labor disputes, or other disruptions. These nurses are typically assigned on short notice and may work in various settings, such as hospitals or long-term care facilities. Their primary role is to ensure that patient care continues safely and effectively during periods when regular staff are unavailable. Workforce Disruption RNs must quickly adapt to new environments and work collaboratively with existing teams.

How does a Workforce Disruption RN typically collaborate with other departments during organizational changes or crises?

A Workforce Disruption RN often works closely with HR, management, and clinical teams to ensure continuity of patient care during periods of staffing shortages, organizational restructuring, or crises such as strikes or emergencies. This role requires strong communication skills to coordinate schedules, provide patient updates, and implement contingency plans. Collaboration is essential, as the Workforce Disruption RN may also train temporary staff or help onboard redeployed employees, ensuring everyone adheres to protocols and maintains high standards of care. Flexibility and adaptability are key, as workflows and team dynamics can change rapidly in response to ongoing disruptions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Workforce Disruption RN, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Workforce Disruption RN, you need a solid clinical background, an active RN license, and the flexibility to adapt quickly to new healthcare environments. Familiarity with various hospital systems, electronic medical records (EMR), and rapid onboarding processes is crucial. Outstanding communication, resilience, and problem-solving skills set top candidates apart in managing changing team dynamics and patient needs. These competencies ensure continuous, high-quality patient care during staffing shortages or organizational transitions.

Job Description:

Job Title: Registered Nurse (RN)

Department: Pharmacy

FLSA: Hourly

About Hy-Vee

At Hy-Vee, we believe the shortest distance between two people is a smile. We're seeking people with a passion for customer service, a willingness to learn, and a commitment to being part of a team that strives to make our customers' lives easier, healthier and happier.

The Role and Why It's Important

Our Registered Nurses bring clinical expertise to the pharmacy setting, supporting pharmacists in vaccine administration, prescription preparation, and patient care. In this role, you'll assist with a wide range of pharmacy functions while applying your nursing knowledge to deliver safe, high-quality service to every customer.

If you are a licensed RN who is passionate about community health, comfortable in a fast-paced retail environment, and committed to exceptional patient care, we'd love to have you on our team.

What You'll Do

No two shifts are exactly the same, but here's what you can expect:

  • Provide prompt, friendly customer service by greeting customers with a smile, learning their names, and making every interaction a positive one

  • Administer vaccines as allowed by law, including at offsite vaccination events as needed

  • Handle customer inquiries that do not require a pharmacist's expertise and judgment

  • Accept new written prescription orders and telephoned refill requests at the discretion of the supervising pharmacist

  • Contact doctor's offices to take or request refill prescriptions as needed

  • Gather and enter prescription and patient information into the computer and assist in maintaining correct patient information

  • Assist pharmacists in preparing prescription drug products for dispensing

  • Prepare and affix labels to prescription containers and prepare prescriptions to be mailed

  • Prepare and submit insurance claims and assist with third-party insurance billing and troubleshooting

  • File prescriptions after they have been dispensed and report any medication errors to appropriate personnel

  • Order, check in, and stock pharmacy supplies and log invoices as necessary

  • Perform cash transactions accurately

  • Maintain the cleanliness of the pharmacy and dispensing area

  • Maintain the confidentiality of customers' private medical information in accordance with HIPAA

  • Adhere to all statutes and regulations pertaining to a registered nurse and pharmacy technician

  • Work with co-workers as a team to ensure customer satisfaction and a pleasant work environment

  • Assist in other areas of the store as needed and take on special projects as assigned

  • Maintain strict adherence to personal hygiene, dress standards, and all Hy-Vee policies and store guidelines

  • Report to work when scheduled and on time

Your Skills

  • Apply logical and scientific thinking to solve problems involving both abstract and concrete variables

  • Perform arithmetic, algebraic, and geometric calculations accurately

  • Compose original correspondence, follow technical manuals, and evaluate technical data

  • Counsel and advise patients and interact professionally with healthcare providers, team members, and store leadership

  • Maintain a high level of discretion and integrity when handling confidential patient information

Reporting Relationships

Accountable and Reports to: Store Director; Store Manager; Assistant Managers of Health Wellness Home, Store Operations, and Perishables; Pharmacy Department Manager; Staff Pharmacists

Education and Experience

  • Nursing degree required; must be licensed with the applicable State Nursing Board and/or possess multi-state licensure privileges upon hire

  • Valid driver's license with no DOT restrictions required for offsite vaccination events; must be 18 years or older to drive a company vehicle

Physical Requirements

  • Physical activity is incidental to the core duties of the role

  • Ability to occasionally walk the floor or facility to observe operations, staff, or product

  • Ability to occasionally handle product for demonstration purposes

  • Exposure to bloodborne pathogens and sharps (needles, lancets) associated with vaccine and immunization administration and other direct patient care duties

  • No regular lifting, carrying, or physical exertion required

Working Environment

This is a fast-paced role in a retail pharmacy where you will handle multiple tasks throughout your shift including vaccine administration, prescription support, and customer service. There is occasional exposure to hazardous chemicals or solvents during compounding, including chemotherapy drugs. When working offsite for vaccination events, you may be exposed to equipment movement hazards, temperature extremes, vibrations, and dampness. Safety is always a priority, and training is provided to help ensure a safe and supportive work environment.
