Job description

Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN)

Volunteers of America, Utah is an affiliate of a national, nonprofit, faith-based organization that has served communities across the United States for more than 125 years. Volunteers of America, Utah's mission is to provide community-supported paths for those who are vulnerable to improve their lives and increase their self-reliance. Our programs serve people experiencing challenges related to mental health, substance use, and homelessness. We encourage all who are passionate about making a difference, including individuals with lived experience, to apply.

The APRN will conduct psychiatric assessments; assess physical health needs, and make appropriate referrals to community physicians; provide management and administration of medication in conjunction with the psychiatrist; and provide a range of treatment, rehabilitation, and support services for individuals with severe mental health disorders and co-occurring conditions including substance use disorder.

Essential Duties:

  • Conduct psychiatric assessments including psychiatric history (e.g., onset, course and effect of illness, past treatment and responses, and risk behaviors), mental status, and diagnoses; use of drugs or alcohol; education and employment; social development and functioning; activities of daily living; family structure and relationships; and physical health, coordinate care and make referrals to primary care and specialty medical providers as indicated.
  • Prescribe, monitor, and adjust psychotropic medications in accordance with evidence-based practices. Conduct ongoing assessments of therapeutic response, side effects, medication adherence, and overall clinical stability.
  • Assess and treat co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders, including the prescribing and management of medications for addiction treatment (MAT) (e.g., buprenorphine, naltrexone, and other evidence-based pharmacotherapies). Monitor effectiveness, adherence, and potential interactions with psychotropic medications, and coordinate care with the interdisciplinary team to support integrated dual-diagnosis treatment.
  • Be actively involved in both acute and long-term psychiatric inpatient treatment of clients. Collaborate with the mental health program team and take a lead role in coordinating and providing the team's medication administration services.
  • Lead and/or actively participate in treatment planning, including initial treatment plans, ongoing reviews, and discharge planning. Ensure psychiatric input is incorporated into individualized care plans, including step-down and transition planning. Educate clients and non-medical staff on medications and their side effects.
  • Complete documentation and insurance authorizations on a timely basis.
  • Provide on-call psychiatric coverage and crisis intervention services as required, including assessment and management of psychiatric emergencies.
  • Attends work on a regular and predictable basis.

Non-Essential Duties:

  • Maintain all continuing education requirements in order to maintain professional level and status.
  • Maintain good professional relationships with appropriate community figures, referral sources, and other professionals.
  • Maintain and enhance professional skills and knowledge through attending conferences/ workshops/courses and reading professional materials that are relevant to job requirements and approved by the Program Director.
  • Demonstrate familiarity with and adherence to Utah laws regarding confidentiality and mandatory reporting requirements.
  • Conduct professional life in accordance with the standards of his/her discipline and the clinical policies and procedures of the agency.
  • Maintain familiarity with issues and trends in the behavioral health field including comorbid mental health issues, advances in psychopharmacology, theory, and evidence-based practices.
  • Performs other functions as necessary or assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Current APRN license in the state of Utah.
  • Experience working in inpatient psychiatric settings preferred.
  • Experience working with individuals diagnosed with a serious mental illness and/or substance use disorder preferred.
  • Demonstrates an ability to use sound judgment within the scope of the position's responsibilities.
  • Ability to maintain professionalism and adapt to change.
  • Ability to uphold professional boundaries, confidentiality regulations, agency policies and procedures, and interact in a professional manner with a diverse workforce, clients, and the public.
  • Organized, detail-oriented, self-starter.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated skills in crisis intervention.
  • Basic computer skills including Microsoft Word and Excel spreadsheets.
  • Must be able to pass Utah-DHHS โ€“ Office of Licensing background screening and pre-employment drug screen.

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to move around the facility, interacting with clients for extended periods.
  • Work is generally performed in an office environment. May entail using a computer for extended periods of time.
