Job description

Position Title: Focus Lab Work Study Academic Support Assistant (CEALS)
Department: CEALS - Focus Lab
Reports To: Administrative Specialist
SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES
The Focus Lab Work Study Academic Support Assistant is a student work-study position within the Center of Excellence for Achievement and Learning Support (CEALS) Department. The Student Academic Support Assistant helps maintain a welcoming, structured, and productive academic environment for students enrolled in the LSS program.
The Focus Lab provides students with dedicated time and space to complete coursework while developing important academic skills such as organization, time management, task initiation, study habits, and accountability.
Under the guidance of LSS professional staff, the Student Academic Support Assistant will help students stay focused on their academic goals, encourage productive study habits, and provide general peer support. The position is designed to promote student independence and success while giving the student employee an opportunity to develop leadership, communication, mentoring, and professional skills.
The Student Academic Support Assistant does not replace professional LSS staff, tutors, or instructors. The student employee should recognize when a concern or question needs to be referred to an LSS professional staff member.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Help maintain a welcoming, respectful, and academically focused environment.
  • Monitor student attendance and participation.
  • Encourage students to remain engaged with their academic work.
  • Assist students with any questions and give guidance on how to move forward if they are struggling with an assignment.
  • Share general study and organization strategies.
  • Assist with maintaining an organized and clean Focus Lab environment.
  • Communicate behavioral or academic concerns to LSS professional staff.
  • Encourage students to identify a specific academic goal for each Focus Lab session.
  • Check in with students throughout the session to encourage progress toward their goals.

ADDITIONAL REQUIRED EXPECTATIONS
  • Commitment to protecting student privacy and following university policies regarding confidential student information.
  • Ability to arrive on time, follow through on responsibilities, maintain appropriate boundaries, and represent the CEALS Department positively.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS REQUIRED
  • Be enrolled as full-time student at Schreiner University.
  • Ability to work independently as well as take direction and execute effectively
  • Ability to think and make decisions independently
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding students

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Interest in education, student success, academic support, counseling, psychology, or a related field.
  • Strong academic standing and demonstrated commitment to personal academic success.
  • Understanding of Universal Design for Learning (UDL)
  • Familiarity with executive functioning skills, including task initiation, planning, prioritization, organization, time management, and self-monitoring
