Job description

Overview

Herzog Railroad Services, Inc. is currently seeking a Controls Engineer in St. Joseph, MO to join our team.

Duties and Responsibilities:

*This is a non-exhaustive overview of the job duties for this position.

  • Controls Engineer will work closely with draftsmen/designers, engineers and project managers to design and develop all aspects of electrical control systems (motion control, instrumentation, control logic, etc…) for railroad equipment across a broad spectrum of complexity and applications for both existing equipment and new product development.
  • Lead all aspects of electrical and electro-mechanical design, wiring, sizing, routing, marking, and inspection of equipment.
  • Electrical panel design, layout and creation of electrical system, inclusive of parts lists for custom and standard products.
  • Assist in preparation of technical machinery information including operator’s manuals, electrical specification, field service reports, etc.
  • As-needed support service of machinery at remote jobsite locations for operator assistance and/or operator training. Also, responding to requests for phone, email, or online services.
  • Analyze and resolve technical electrical problems.
  • Troubleshooting mechanical, hydraulic and other electro-mechanical systems.
  • Candidate will be involved in the development of all new equipment, enhanced product capabilities and product improvements serving inside our R&D team. As such, candidate must be able to work in a team environment, yet possess a self-motivation to seek and solve challenges not yet defined.
  • Regularly work on and around railcars and heavy equipment while performing hands-on work in the field environment.
  • Regular and consistent engagement, participation and promotion of Herzog’s Culture and its essential behaviors are a requirement for this position.
  • Regular and predictable attendance and punctuality are a requirement for this position.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Advanced knowledge of industrial controls development including: Ladder diagrams, RSLogix 500 and 5000, and/or FactoryTalk View Studio.
  • Experience troubleshooting control circuits, motors, and drives.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and be a team player.
  • Experience with CAN protocols (J1939, CANopen, etc), preferred.
  • Thorough knowledge of applicable design standards (NEC, NFPA, NMRA), preferred.
  • Familiarity with CoDeSys platform, preferred.
  • Previous railroad or mobile equipment experience, preferred.
  • Some travel involved.

Pre-Employment Requirements:

  • Pass and maintain e-RAILSAFE pre-employment background check and safety certification.
  • Subject to motor vehicle report review.
  • Maintain valid driver’s license and endorsements as required per position.
  • Pass pre-employment physical, medical evaluation, and drug screen due to the safety sensitive nature of this position.
  • Successfully complete and maintain any required safety certification and testing on an annual basis.

Physical Requirements:

The physical demands described below must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential job functions of this role. This is a non-exhaustive overview of the physical requirements of this job.

  • Perform light work, occasionally exerting up to 20 pounds of force.
  • Able to walk on uneven surfaces.
  • Occasionally ascend/descend step ladders and/or stairs.
  • Regularly sit and stand for an extended period of time.
  • Regularly kneel, bend, and squat.
  • Must successfully pass color/vision examinations as required by the position.
  • Must be able to hear and distinguish auditory signals as required by the position.
  • Able to work in conditions with loud noise; work on/around heavy/moving machinery.
  • Able to work outdoors in all weather conditions (hot, cold, rain, snow, and sleet).
