Work Retail information

What does it mean to work retail?

Working retail involves selling products or services directly to customers, usually in a store, mall, or online setting. Retail workers help customers find what they need, answer questions, and process transactions at the register. They may also stock shelves, set up displays, and keep the store clean and organized. The job often requires good communication skills, patience, and the ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a retail position, and why are they important?

To thrive in retail, you need strong customer service abilities, basic math skills, and often a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with point-of-sale (POS) systems, inventory management tools, and sometimes product-specific certifications is important. Exceptional communication, problem-solving, and teamwork skills help you excel in customer interactions and collaborative environments. These skills are crucial for delivering excellent service, driving sales, and ensuring smooth store operations.

What are some common challenges faced by retail employees and how can they be managed effectively?

Retail employees often face challenges such as handling difficult customers, managing high workloads during peak hours, and adapting to changing promotions or inventory. Effective communication, patience, and strong organizational skills are crucial in overcoming these challenges. Many retailers provide training on conflict resolution and time management to help employees succeed. Team collaboration and support from supervisors also play a key role in creating a positive and productive work environment.

Job description

Benefits:
  • 401(k)
  • Bonus based on performance
  • Competitive salary
  • Employee discounts
  • Health insurance
  • Opportunity for advancement

This is a sales-floor role first. You work retail shifts, deliver a great in-store experience, and hit your sales goals every month. What sets this seat apart from a standard floor job: you do not let slow periods go to waste. In your downtime you work assigned leads through Verizon's lead and engagement platform, support local events, and run outbound text outreach to pull customers back into the store.
What You'll Do
On the floor:
  • Work retail shifts and deliver an excellent in-store customer experience.
  • Sell Verizon wireless plans, devices, upgrades, accessories, and business solutions.
  • Hit individual sales goals, activation targets, and attach metrics.
  • Handle customer questions, account changes, and issue resolution with professionalism.
Lead management and outreach:
  • Work and follow up on assigned leads through Verizon's lead and engagement platform.
  • Run outbound text and SMS outreach to re-engage past and prospective customers.
  • Support and staff local community and business events that drive store traffic.
What We're Looking For:
  • Retail sales or customer-facing experience. Wireless experience preferred.
  • Motivated by commission, with a proven ability to hit sales goals.
  • Comfortable on a busy sales floor and turning walk-ins into sales.
  • Self-motivated to work leads and stay productive during slower periods instead of standing around.
  • Comfortable learning and using sales, CRM, and customer messaging platforms.
  • Strong communication skills. Bilingual (English / Spanish) is a plus in many of our markets.
  • Availability for a full retail schedule, including weekends, evenings, and holidays.
  • Reliable transportation and willingness to attend occasional evening or weekend events.
What We Offer:
  • $70,000 base salary plus uncapped commission and performance bonus. Top performers earn well above base.
  • Medical and dental insurance with a company monthly subsidy.
  • Paid sick time per state and local law.
  • Verizon Sales Maker employee wireless discount.
  • Automatic enrollment in LifeMart, our discount program for everyday goods and services.
  • Real growth. We are expanding across California and promote from within.
