Job Description Summary
Character of Duties:
Develop and edit technical reports, grant deliverables, fact sheets, outreach materials, presentations, and other project documents;
Gathering field notes, interviews, photographs, video, and audio that document University of Guam (UOG) Island Conservation Lab (ICL), research, field operations, student training, conservation initiatives, and public engagement activities;
Translate Island Conservation Lab research and field activities into accurate, accessible stories for community, partner, media, and technical audiences;
Interview scientists, staff, partners, and community participants; verify facts and coordinate content review and approval;
Accompany field teams to document native-plant conservation, forest restoration, endangered-species recovery, invasive-species management, ethnobotany, natural resource policies, and outreach activities through writing, photography, video, and audio;
Draft captions for photographs, news stories, social-media posts, outreach material, event announcements, website content, newsletters, and other communication products that translate UOG Island Conservation Lab research and conservation activities for audiences for approval;
Draft press releases, feature stories, web content, social-media copy, captions, talking points, and briefing materials;
Edit and proofread materials for clarity, consistency, accessibility, brand standards, and project or grant requirements;
Coordinate with the UOG Marketing and Communications, Office of Research and Sponsored Programs (ORSP), funders, and project partners;
Maintain editorial schedules, project files, media releases, consent records, and organized digital asset archives;
Support community outreach events, workshops, presentations, and public-education campaigns;
Track communication products and engagement measures and assist with activity and performance reports;
Perform other duties as assigned;
Minimum Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in relevant field from a U.S. regionally accredited institution or foreign equivalent;
One (1) year of experience in media; Technical writing samples required. The principal investigator may require specific knowledge, skills, or abilities to meet project/grant objectives;
A portfolio or representative work samples demonstrating relevant experience in media production, writing, graphic design, photography, videography, or digital communications is required;
Preferred Qualifications
Preferred Qualifications:
One (1) year of experience developing science or conservation communication materials for public, technical, or stakeholder audiences, preferably in Guam, the CNMI, or another Pacific island community;
Experience with technical reports, media writing, photography, video, or digital content is preferred;
Minimum Knowledge, Abilities and Skills
Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability to identify native plant species of Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands;
Ability to hike through field sites and difficult terrain in all weather conditions;
Ability to communicate effectively and demonstrate strong verbal and written skills;
Ability to translate scientific and technical information into clear, accurate, audience-appropriate content;
Knowledge of writing, editing, proofreading, fact-checking, and technical-document conventions;
Ability to interview researchers, partners, and community members and accurately represent their work;
Ability to use digital publishing, photography, audio, video, and social-media tools;
Ability to effectively use Canva, Adobe Photoshop, and other graphic design software to create clear, accurate, and engaging visual materials for science communication, conservation outreach, and digital media;
Ability to work in a team, manage time efficiently, and prioritize multiple deadlines;
Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends and evenings, as needed;

Work Eligibility:

Police and Court Clearance:
Pursuant to Public Law No. 28-24 and Executive Order No. 2005-34, applicants selected for a position are required to provide original police and court (Superior Court of Guam) clearances of no more than three (3) months old prior to commencement of employment. Off-island applicants must obtain clearances from their place of residence. Applicants are responsible for fees associated with obtaining the clearances.
Should an applicant be convicted of any crimes other than a minor traffic violation, all applicable information must be provided in the form of a police clearance report and court clearance report. Failure to admit any felony convictions may result in immediate disqualification or disciplinary action.
Section 25103, Chapter 25, Title 10 of the Guam Code Annotated requires college or university employees to undergo a physical examination, to include a test for tuberculosis (skin or x-ray), prior to employment and at least annually thereafter. A report of such examination must be conducted by a licensed physician within a state or territory of the United States and must be submitted upon request.
Upon selection of hire, you will be required to provide additional documents (if necessary) as condition of employment.
