They often use digital tools to provide remote support, troubleshoot issues, and guide clients or on-site personnel through repairs. These engineers may also travel occasionally to client locations if hands-on service is required. The role typically requires strong technical skills, problem-solving abilities, and excellent communication, as much of the job involves assisting customers virtually.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a work from home field service engineer?

To thrive as a Work From Home Field Service Engineer, you need a strong background in engineering or electronics, technical troubleshooting abilities, and often a relevant degree or certification such as CompTIA A+ or manufacturer-specific credentials. Familiarity with remote diagnostic tools, CRM software, and virtual collaboration platforms is typically required. • Perform relay and protection testing where transformers interface with protective schemes
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot On-Load Tap Changer (OLTC/LTC) mechanisms, cooling systems, and control/monitoring equipment
  • Document all test results and produce clear, customer-ready technical reports
  • Execute troubleshooting, corrective maintenance, repair, and end-of-life/retrofit services on transformers in the field
  • Proactively identify potential equipment failures and recommend corrective or preventive actions to customers
  • Support warranty investigations, root cause analysis, and field failure reporting back to Engineering and Quality
  • Respond to emergency service calls, including after-hours and weekend support as required
  • Serve as the primary on-site technical representative for Giga Energy, building and maintaining strong customer relationships
  • Communicate job status, technical findings, and recommendations clearly to customers, contractors, and internal stakeholders
  • Prepare material lists, technical quotations, and scopes of work for follow-on service opportunities
  • Coordinate with site engineers, contractors, and internal Engineering/Quality teams during outages and installs
  • Comply fully with OSHA, NFPA 70E (arc flash/electrical safety), and Giga Energy EHS policies on every site visit
  • Maintain required certifications (e.g., NETA, OSHA 10/30, first aid/CPR) and complete ongoing safety training

  • Maintain timely, accurate service reports, timesheets, expense reports, and job status updates
  • Feed field observations (failure modes, install issues, design feedback) into Giga's NCR/SCAR and continuous improvement processes
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, or related field - OR equivalent experience (military electrical/electronics training, associate degree + relevant field experience)
  • 2+ years of hands-on field experience with power/distribution transformers, switchgear, or related power delivery equipment (entry-level candidates with strong internships/training programs will be considered)

  • Willingness and ability to travel 50-75%, including domestic and potentially international sites
  • Valid driver's license; ability to maintain/obtain a passport

Bonus Points
  • Experience with OEM transformer platforms (ABB, Siemens, GE, Hitachi Energy, Powell, ERMCO) or equivalent
