Position Summary:

Employees will perform varied manual labor work on highways within Marathon County. Employees usually work Monday through Thursday, typically between 40 - 50 hours per week. Work duties may extend into the fall or winter depending upon availability of seasonal employees and the needs of the department.

Summer 2026 - Anticipated season begins mid May and runs through the summer.

The Highway Department hires a limited number of seasonal employees for the summer months. The positions remain open until filled.

Examples of Work Performed:

The following duties are typical of this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required or assigned.

  • May perform a variety of manual work flagging traffic,setting work zone signs, etc.

  • May operate mowers of various sizes.

  • May perform routine computer data entry.

  • Maintains daily work logs.

  • May sweepshop floors and perform other custodial duties.

  • May perform landscaping tasks including raking, shoveling, erosion control installation and maintenance, etc.

  • May clean equipment usingcleaning agents and other chemicals.

  • May assist full-time employees in road and shoulder repairand maintenance work.

  • Performs other related work as required.

Qualifications:

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.

  • Possession of a driver's license and a driving record that meets County standards.

  • Experience driving vehicles with manual transmissions desirable.

  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

  • Ability to perform varied maintenance tasks.

  • Employee once hired will be state certified in flagger training and work zone setup.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Skillin the use of motorized equipment. (Training will be provided.)

  • Skill in operatingvehicles and equipment effectively, safely, and efficiently. (Training will be provided.)

  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

  • Knowledge of building and ground maintenance activities.

  • Ability to effectively communicate with the traveling public.

  • Ability to work outdoors in adverse weather conditions.

  • Ability to follow safety rules.

  • Ability to contribute to a positive work culture that fosters excellent customer service and teamwork.

Compensation:

  • $18.00 per hour - new hires

  • $18.50 per hour - 2nd year returning

  • $19.00 per hour - 3rd or more year returning

  • No benefits are provided for these seasonal positions.

Physical Requirements:

High Physical Requirements - Job requires significant physical exertion, with tasks that involve more active movement. This job may include standing for long periods, lifting heavy objects, or engaging in manual labor.
