What is a WordPress Developer?

A WordPress Developer is a professional who specializes in designing, developing, and maintaining websites using the WordPress platform. They create custom themes and plugins, optimize website performance, and ensure security and scalability. WordPress Developers may also integrate third-party services, troubleshoot issues, and provide updates to keep websites running smoothly. Their expertise covers both front-end and back-end development within the WordPress ecosystem.

What does a WordPress Developer do?

A WordPress developer creates applications using the WordPress open-source content management system (CMS). The WordPress CMS is very popular among bloggers, media sites, and other online forums. Your responsibilities as a WordPress developer vary with the position, but often include coding and developing plugins to extend its functionality to specific tasks. Your duties also involve customizing a build and creating modules to a client’s specifications. Once the site is established, you perform routine maintenance to ensure the site continues to run smoothly and update the platform and its components. You typically work with a variety of programming languages and may also oversee the security components of the system.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a WordPress Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a WordPress Developer, you need strong skills in PHP, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and a solid understanding of WordPress core, themes, and plugins, often supported by a relevant degree or web development certifications. Familiarity with development tools like Git, MySQL databases, popular page builders, and REST APIs is commonly required. Problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication are essential soft skills that help you collaborate with clients and teams. These abilities ensure you can build secure, scalable, and user-friendly WordPress websites that meet client needs and industry standards.

How does a WordPress Developer typically collaborate with designers and content creators on website projects?

WordPress Developers often work closely with designers to translate visual concepts into functional themes and with content creators to ensure website structure supports their needs. Collaboration usually involves regular meetings to discuss project goals, sharing feedback during development sprints, and using tools like Slack, Trello, or Jira to manage tasks and updates. This teamwork ensures that the final website not only looks appealing but also provides a seamless user experience and is easy for non-technical team members to update. Effective communication and flexibility are key to aligning technical capabilities with creative vision and content requirements.

About O2DCA

O2 Digital Creative Agency has been thriving as a Software and Marketing Agency in Pittsburgh since 2010. We create a variety of web-based solutions for our clients, from simple brochure sites, to e-commerce sites, mobile apps, and custom business management software platforms. We are professional, people-centric, and dedicated to providing a new and unique experience for our clients, through the use of innovative technology and the latest industry standards.

Job Overview

We are seeking a UI/UX Web Designer & Front-End Developer to lead the visual and user-experience direction of client websites from discovery through implementation. Reporting to the Managing Developer, this role will work closely with project managers, developers, marketers, and clients to turn business goals, brand systems, and content into clear, polished, responsive web experiences.

This is a design-first role with hands-on frontend responsibility. You will own user flows, information architecture, wireframes, high-fidelity mockups, design presentations, and reusable interface systems. You will also implement many approved designs directly in WordPress using visual-building tools and HTML/CSS, allowing design intent to carry cleanly into the finished site.

Within the development team, you will be the primary owner of web design and design quality. You will collaborate with developers across the team on custom functionality, theme architecture, ecommerce behavior, technical constraints, and implementation planning, while providing clear design direction and reusable production patterns for teammates carrying designs into the finished site. You are not expected to own backend plugin development, but you should recognize when a requirement needs custom engineering instead of a fragile visual workaround.

Key Responsibilities
  • UX Planning: Translate client goals and content into user flows, information architecture, page structures, wireframes, and clear responsive behavior.
  • Interface Design: Create polished desktop and mobile designs in Figma with strong typography, spacing, hierarchy, component states, interaction guidance, and realistic content behavior.
  • Design Systems: Establish reusable visual styles, components, patterns, and design tokens that support consistent implementation across pages and future enhancements.
  • Stakeholder Presentations: Present design concepts and rationale clearly, gather actionable feedback, distinguish preferences from functional requirements, and guide revisions toward an approved direction.
  • Visual Builder Implementation: Build and refine production-ready WordPress pages using Gutenberg, Elementor, or comparable visual-building tools while avoiding unnecessary builder complexity.
  • Front-End Development: Write clean, maintainable HTML and CSS for custom layouts, responsive behavior, component styling, and visual refinements that builder settings alone cannot achieve reliably.
  • Technical Collaboration: Partner with developers to identify constraints, define component behavior, prepare implementation notes, and hand off requirements for custom JavaScript, PHP, integrations, or structured content.
  • Design & Frontend QA: Review work for visual accuracy, accessibility, browser compatibility, responsive behavior, content flexibility, and alignment with approved designs before PM or client review.
  • Production Guidance: Give clear design direction and reusable patterns to junior or supporting developers completing content population, page production, and visual revisions.
  • Process Improvement: Help establish reusable discovery questions, wireframe patterns, design-review checkpoints, component libraries, and designer-to-developer handoff standards.

What We’re Looking For
  • 3-5 years of professional UI/UX, web design, digital product design, or closely related experience, ideally in an agency or multi-client environment.
  • Strong Design Portfolio: A portfolio demonstrating responsive website or digital-product work from early thinking through polished execution, including wireframes, user flows, design systems, high-fidelity interfaces, and completed projects.
  • Visual Design Expertise: A strong command of typography, color, spacing, hierarchy, composition, responsive design, and consistent interface patterns.
  • Figma Proficiency: Advanced working knowledge of Figma, including components, variants, auto layout, reusable libraries, prototyping, and developer-ready file organization.
  • Front-End Skills: Strong practical knowledge of semantic HTML and modern CSS, including responsive layouts, reusable classes, browser developer tools, and troubleshooting visual defects.
  • WordPress Builder Experience: Hands-on experience building production websites with Gutenberg, Elementor, or comparable visual tools while maintaining consistency and reasonable editing experiences for clients.
  • UX & Accessibility Judgment: Understanding of information architecture, usability, interaction patterns, content hierarchy, keyboard behavior, screen-size considerations, and accessible design fundamentals.
  • Technical Collaboration: Comfortable working with Git, staging environments, ticketing systems, developers, and technical constraints. Familiarity with JavaScript, WordPress templates, or Shopify themes is helpful but not required.
  • Client Communication: Able to explain design decisions in plain language, receive and organize feedback, and keep design choices tied to project goals and user needs.
  • Agency Readiness: Organized, adaptable, and capable of balancing multiple clients, deadlines, review cycles, and levels of project ambiguity without sacrificing quality.

What We Value
  • Energy & Attitude: Shows up positive, engaged, and ready to contribute to a resilient team dynamic.
  • Ownership & Accountability: Takes personal responsibility for assigned work, follows through, and raises concerns before they become delivery problems.
  • Collaboration & Quality: Works smoothly across departments and does not allow incomplete or unvetted work to reach a client.
  • Attention to Detail: Cares deeply about the details, the data, and the final product.
  • Drive: Pushes for better work, better processes, and better outcomes for our clients.

Benefits
  • Hybrid Environment: A mix of regular in-person collaboration in Hopewell and work-from-home days based on the final role schedule.
  • Technology: O2DCA provides the computing equipment needed for the role.
  • Health & Dental: Generous percentage employer-paid medical and dental plan offerings.
  • Retirement: O2DCA provides a 2% non-elective contribution after 1 year; no employee match is required.
  • Time Off: 3 weeks of Paid Time Off (PTO) and 12 paid holidays.
