What is a WordPress Designer Developer?

A WordPress Designer Developer is a professional who specializes in creating, designing, and developing websites using the WordPress content management system. They handle both the visual design aspects—such as layout, color schemes, and user experience—and the technical development tasks, including theme customization, plugin integration, and site optimization. These professionals ensure that websites are visually appealing, functional, responsive, and easy to manage. WordPress Designer Developers often collaborate with clients to understand their needs and turn them into fully functional websites that are secure and scalable.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a WordPress Designer Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a WordPress Designer Developer, you need proficiency in HTML, CSS, PHP, JavaScript, and a solid understanding of WordPress themes and plugins, often supported by a relevant degree or web development certifications. Familiarity with popular page builders (like Elementor or WPBakery), Git version control, and design tools such as Adobe XD or Figma is typically required. Creativity, problem-solving, and effective communication help you collaborate with clients and teams while delivering user-friendly, visually appealing websites. These skills and qualities are crucial for building functional, attractive, and scalable WordPress sites that meet client needs and industry standards.

How does a WordPress Designer Developer typically collaborate with content creators and marketing teams?

WordPress Designer Developers often work closely with content creators and marketing teams to ensure that website layouts, themes, and functionalities align with brand messaging and campaign objectives. This collaboration includes regular meetings to gather requirements, reviewing content placement, and making iterative design adjustments based on feedback. Effective communication is key, as developers must translate creative ideas into user-friendly, visually appealing, and technically sound website solutions. Additionally, they may assist with training team members on updating site content and troubleshooting basic issues.

Job description

THE ROLE: Where design thinking meets production code.
Promega is looking for a Front-End Designer & Developer who thrives at the intersection of craft and engineering. You'll shape the digital experiences researchers interact with every day - translating brand intent into intuitive, accessible, beautifully built interfaces across promega.com and our broader network of affiliated sites.
This isn't a role for someone who only wants to build, or someone who only wants to design. The ideal candidate moves naturally between both, comfortable in Figma and equally comfortable pushing pixel-perfect, production-ready code. You'll be a critical bridge between our brand and design team and front-end engineering, helping to steward and evolve Promega's front-end design solutions as our web platform grows.
You'll be joining a team that's actively investing in AI-powered web capabilities. If you're curious about what modern web development looks like when AI is part of the workflow, not a replacement for skill, this is that team.
What You'll Do
Apply today and include a portfolio link. We want to see both the design thinking and the code behind it.
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Maintain, update, and enhance CMS and we web solutions for Promega-affiliated sites, and provide development/design support for Promega.com as needed.
2. Develop front-end features and components using modern HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and frameworks such as React.
3. Build and refine templates, page layouts, and UI elements within content management systems such as WordPress and CraftCMS.
4. Create user interface designs, wireframes, and prototypes that support intuitive and positive user experiences.
5. Collaborate with internal partners to design and develop new content, pages, and user experiences that align with organizational objectives.
6. Ensure websites follow accessibility standards, performance best practices, and responsive design principles.
7. Troubleshoot front-end issues, coordinate resolutions, and implement improvements based on analytics and stakeholder feedback.
8. Apply strategic thinking to evaluate stakeholder requests, translate them into clear, actionable, user-centered solutions, and work independently to move projects from concept to execution.
9. Contribute to the evolution and consistency of design systems across supported sites.
10. Stay current with emerging web technologies, design trends, and AI-powered tools, and proactively incorporate them to improve development efficiency, user experience, and the overall quality of digital deliverables.
11. Demonstrates inclusion through their own words and actions and is accountable for a safe workspace. Acts with kindness, curiosity and respect for others.
12. Embracing and being open to incorporating Promega's 6 Emotional & Social Intelligence (ESI) core principles in daily work.
13. Understands and complies with ethical, legal and regulatory requirements applicable to our business.
What You Bring
SKILLS & EXPERIENCE:
1. 4-6+ years of professional experience in front-end development and UI/UX design.
2. Front-end development: HTML5, CSS3/Sass, JavaScript, and frameworks React and Tailwind.
3. CMS platforms: WordPress, CraftCMS, Sitecore or equivalent.
4. Design tools: Figma, including design tokens, variables, and component libraries.
5. Design system work: Experience maintaining and contributing to a shared component ecosystem.
6. UX fundamentals: Wireframing, prototyping, accessibility, responsive design.
7. Cross-functional collaboration: Comfortable working across design, dev, brand, and marketing teams.
8. Strong portfolio: Portfolio of design and development experience.
We're also interested in candidates with:
1. Web performance optimization and GEO/SEO knowledge.
2. Experience with analytics platforms such as GA4.
3. A strong visual design background that influences technical decisions, not just aesthetics.
