Job description

Manthei Wood Products is seeking a hands-on and problem-solving Mechanical Engineer to join our team in Petoskey, Michigan. This role plays a vital part in keeping our production running smoothly while driving innovation, machinery optimization, and continuous improvement. The ideal candidate is collaborative, responsible, detail-oriented, and enjoys working with wood-based production systems in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

This is a full-time position located on-site in beautiful Northern Michigan. You will work closely with production, maintenance, and leadership teams to enhance operations, solve mechanical challenges, and integrate new technologies.

What You’ll Do

  • Collaborate with production, maintenance, and leadership teams to enhance plant operations and solve mechanical challenges

  • Design, implement, and optimize mechanical systems for hardwood veneer and plywood production

  • Troubleshoot and resolve mechanical issues directly on the production floor

  • Implement preventative maintenance strategies to enhance machinery reliability and efficiency

  • Identify and integrate new technologies, streamline manufacturing processes, and support lean initiatives

  • Ensure full compliance with company safety and environmental regulations

  • Work independently to diagnose issues, ensure accuracy, and drive continuous improvement projects

What We’re Looking For

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field

  • Experience in industrial or manufacturing environments (wood products experience is a plus)

  • Strong knowledge of mechanical design, automation, and preventative maintenance strategies

  • Hands-on approach with a proven knack for troubleshooting and complex problem-solving

  • Strong attention to detail, high accuracy, and a commitment to quality and safety

  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to work proactive and independently with minimal supervision

  • Passion for continuous improvement and lean manufacturing principles
