Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
ITS Infrastructure, Operations, & Networking (I,O,& N)) manages the ITS data centers and provides around-the-clock support for ITS business computing activities. I&O also supports and maintains the infrastructure for network, data communications transport services, and campus desktop computers, and maintains the infrastructure for the operating systems for non-research ITS servers and for disaster recovery and business continuity activities for ITS. I&O also manages the enterprise-wide IT Service Management platform ServiceNow.
Position Summary
This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that may include a partially remote work location, consistent with System Office policy. UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station.
UNC's wireless network includes more than 12,000 access points, making it one of the largest higher education wireless deployments in the country. The campus has long operated on Aruba infrastructure; in the summer of 2025 the University selected Cisco Meraki as its wireless platform and has begun migrating to Meraki using a local gateway architecture. This position will help carry out that migration while keeping daily operations running smoothly on both platforms.
The Senior Wireless Engineer works closely with other wireless engineers, network engineering teams, and network architecture to support daily operations, troubleshoot complex issues, and deliver new wireless services. Responsibilities include:
  • Monitoring and maintaining the wireless infrastructure and associated network services
  • Supporting the campus-wide migration from Aruba to Cisco Meraki, including configuration, validation, and building cutovers
  • Troubleshooting connectivity and performance issues across the full client and infrastructure path, including wireless association, authentication, NAC, RADIUS, DHCP, switching, routing, DNS, and wireless platform operations
  • Creating predictive wireless designs and performing site surveys to support new construction, renovation, and operational initiatives
  • Supporting wireless platform lifecycle activities, including firmware management, feature validation, and operational testing
  • Working directly with campus stakeholders to provide technical guidance and practical recommendations for wireless deployments and related technologies
  • Evaluating new technologies and operational improvements that strengthen service quality, scalability, and user experience
  • Participating in operational support, maintenance activities, and on-call responsibilities as needed

Successful candidates will demonstrate strong troubleshooting ability, intellectual curiosity, clear communication skills, and the ability to work well within a collaborative engineering team.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Master's and 1-2 years' experience; or Bachelors and 2-4 years' experience; or will accept a combination of related education and experience in substitution.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Demonstrated experience working with 802.11 technologies in an enterprise environment
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
  • Experience engineering, supporting, and troubleshooting large-scale campus wireless environments
  • Strong working knowledge of 802.11 wireless technologies, RF fundamentals, and wireless client behavior
  • Experience with Cisco Meraki wireless, including local gateway deployments
  • Experience with Aruba wireless environments (ArubaOS 8.x)
  • Experience planning or executing migrations between wireless platforms
  • Experience creating predictive wireless designs and performing wireless site surveys
  • Experience troubleshooting connectivity and performance issues across the full client and infrastructure path, including wireless association, authentication, NAC, RADIUS, DHCP, DNS, switching, and routing
  • Experience using packet captures, spectrum analysis, and network monitoring platforms to investigate and resolve operational issues
  • Familiarity with programmatic AI, such as using large language model APIs and tools like Claude to build scripts, automation, and operational tooling
  • Relevant industry certifications such as CWNA are beneficial but not required
Special Physical/Mental Requirements
  • Valid NC driver's license or ability to obtain a license within 30 days of hire
  • Ability and willingness to climb ladders as needed for wireless surveys and equipment installation or inspection
