What is wireless engineering?

Wireless engineering is a specialized field of engineering focused on designing, developing, and maintaining wireless communication systems. This includes technologies such as Wi-Fi, cellular networks, Bluetooth, and satellite communications. Wireless engineers work on hardware, software, and network infrastructure to ensure reliable and secure transmission of data over the air. Their work is essential for enabling mobile devices, Internet of Things (IoT) applications, and modern telecommunication networks.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a wireless engineer?

To thrive as a Wireless Engineer, you need a strong background in electrical engineering, RF design, and network protocols, often supported by a relevant degree and industry certifications like CWNA or CCNA Wireless. Proficiency with wireless planning tools, spectrum analyzers, and network management systems is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving skills, and effective communication help professionals excel in troubleshooting and collaborating with cross-functional teams. These skills ensure reliable wireless network performance, efficient issue resolution, and the ability to meet organizational connectivity needs.

How do wireless engineers typically collaborate with other teams during a network deployment project?

Wireless engineers frequently work cross-functionally with network architects, site surveyors, project managers, and field technicians to ensure successful network deployments. They are responsible for translating technical requirements into practical solutions, often coordinating closely with IT and operations teams to integrate wireless infrastructure with existing systems. Effective communication and teamwork are essential, as wireless engineers must address site-specific challenges, troubleshoot issues, and ensure that all stakeholders are aligned on project goals and timelines.

Are wireless engineers in demand?

Wireless engineers are in high demand due to the ongoing expansion of wireless networks, 5G deployment, and increasing reliance on wireless communication technologies. Employers seek professionals skilled in RF design, network optimization, and related tools, often requiring certifications like CWNP or Cisco Wireless certifications. The role offers strong job growth prospects in telecommunications, technology, and network infrastructure sectors.

How much does a wireless engineer make?

Wireless engineers typically earn a median annual salary of around $80,000 to $120,000, depending on experience, location, and certifications. Senior roles or those with specialized skills in network design and troubleshooting can earn higher salaries, often exceeding $130,000 annually.

What does a wireless engineer do?

A wireless engineer designs, implements, and maintains wireless communication systems such as Wi-Fi, cellular networks, and Bluetooth. They analyze signal coverage, troubleshoot connectivity issues, and often use tools like spectrum analyzers and network simulators, requiring knowledge of radio frequency principles and relevant certifications.

Job description

At WHOOP, we're on a mission to unlock human performance and healthspan. WHOOP empowers members to perform at a higher level through a deeper understanding of their bodies and daily lives.

As a Staff RF Engineer on the WHOOP Hardware team, you will lead the architecture, integration, and delivery of the wireless systems that power WHOOP's wearable products. Working closely with Electrical, Firmware, Mechanical, Manufacturing, and Product teams, you will translate system-level requirements into robust, production-ready RF solutions.

WHOOP products rely on highly integrated wireless systems that demand exceptional RF performance, antenna efficiency, coexistence, power efficiency, and manufacturability within an ultra-compact wearable form factor. You will provide technical leadership across RF architecture, validation, certification, and production while helping shape the future of wireless technologies at WHOOP.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Lead RF system validation, characterization, and debugging using industry-standard lab instrumentation.

  • Drive RF circuit design, electromagnetic simulation, and system analysis to inform architecture, performance, and design decisions.

  • Partner cross-functionally with firmware, mechanical, manufacturing, product, and operations teams to define, integrate, and deliver robust RF systems.

  • Define RF hardware requirements, validation strategies, and production test methodologies to ensure robust wireless performance from development through manufacturing.

  • Own RF certification efforts and ensure compliance with global wireless regulatory standards, including FCC Part 15, CISPR 11, EN 55035, and the Radio Equipment Directive (RED).

  • Establish RF design standards and provide technical guidance for antenna integration, PCB layout, RF routing, grounding, shielding, matching networks, and desense mitigation.

  • Advance research and development of next-generation RF architectures, antenna technologies, manufacturing techniques, and system-level solutions that enable different form factors and feature expansion.

  • Mentor engineers and establish RF engineering best practices across design, validation, and debugging while effectively communicating technical risks and recommendations to engineering and leadership stakeholders.

  • Travel up to 15%, domestically and internationally.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • BS or higher in Electrical Engineering or related field.

  • 8+ years of experience in relevant RF or wireless engineering.

  • Deep experience working with RF communication systems, including antenna integration, system-level RF performance optimization, conducted/radiated testing, coexistence, and desense mitigation.

  • Strong grasp of RF and electrical engineering principles, including circuit design, component fundamentals, PCB layout, grounding, shielding, and digital communication protocols.

  • Expert hands-on experience with RF lab equipment, including oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, VNAs, signal generators, calibration tools, and radiated test systems.

  • Strong experience with EM simulation software such as CST and HFSS.

  • Proven experience leading RF design, validation, certification, and production test strategies from concept through production.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to influence cross-functional technical decisions and mentor engineers through design reviews, documentation, and hands-on technical guidance.

  • Strong commitment to embracing and leveraging AI tools in day-to-day tasks, ensuring AI-assisted work aligns with the same high-quality standards as personal contributions.
