What is a wireframe?

A Wireframe job typically involves creating low-fidelity visual guides that outline the structure and functionality of a digital product, such as a website or mobile app. Wireframes help designers, developers, and stakeholders understand layout, navigation, and user experience before full design and development begin. Professionals in this role use tools like Figma, Sketch, or Adobe XD to create wireframes that serve as blueprints for the final product.

What are some common challenges faced by wireframe designers in their day-to-day work?

Wireframe Designers often navigate the challenge of balancing user needs with business requirements and technical constraints. Rapid project timelines can require quick iterations while maintaining accuracy and clarity in their wireframes. Collaborating with cross-functional teams, such as developers, product managers, and visual designers, demands strong communication to ensure everyone has a shared understanding of design intent. This role also involves gathering and integrating feedback efficiently to improve design solutions throughout the development cycle.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the wireframe position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Wireframe Designer, strong skills in user interface (UI) and user experience (UX) design, along with a good understanding of information architecture, are essential, usually supported by experience or education in design or a related field. Proficiency in tools such as Sketch, Figma, Adobe XD, or Balsamiq is common, and familiarity with basic prototyping or wireframing certifications can be advantageous. Excellent communication, collaboration, and attention to detail help drive clear project direction and engage stakeholders effectively. These skills ensure that design solutions are user-centered, meet project objectives, and align with team goals in fast-paced development environments.

Being good neighbors – helping people, investing in our communities, and making the world a better place – is who we are at State Farm. It is at the core of how we operate and the reason for our success. We're moving with urgency to become a Next Gen Good Neighbor, with technology that strengthens human connections and enhances the customer experience. As an employee, you'll spend less time navigating systems and more time applying judgment, empathy, and expertise in the moments that matter most.

Location: Bloomington, IL; Dunwoody, GA; Richardson, TX; Tempe, AZ, Los Altos, CA
Hybrid Work arrangement:  A "Hybrid" position means selected candidates will be assigned to a facility and will spend some time working both in office and from their home.

SPONSORSHIP:  Applicants for this position are required to be eligible to lawfully work in the U.S. immediately; employer will not sponsor applicants for U.S. work authorization (e.g. H-1B visa) for this opportunity.

Responsibilities

Are you naturally curious, deeply human centered, and energized by turning ideas into experiences people can use and understand? Do you enjoy rapidly creating, testing, and improving new concepts? Are you interested in how emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence and agentic experiences, can improve customer and employee experiences?

The Innovation Experience Design team is seeking a Product Designer to help shape new products, services, capabilities, and ways of working across the Innovation lifecycle.

In this role, you will translate research, experience strategy, and product direction into tangible and testable solutions. You will work across the Innovation lifecycle, with your greatest focus as initiatives move from late Discovery into proof of concept and Pilot.

You will partner with the Experience Lead, Product Experience Designer, Product, Technology, Enterprise Research, Content Design, architecture, and business partners to create, test, refine, and deliver experiences. This role is ideal for a hands-on designer who can independently manage complex design assignments, work effectively through ambiguity, and move quickly without sacrificing evidence, usability, accessibility, or design quality.

In this role, you will be responsible for:

  • Collaborate with the Experience Lead, Product Experience Designer, Product, Technology, Enterprise Research, Content Design, architecture, and business partners to understand customer and employee pain points, clarify requirements, evaluate constraints, and co create solutions
  • Translate research findings, experience strategies, hypotheses, and priority use cases into process flows, user flows, conceptual diagrams, journey maps, wireframes, low to high fidelity prototypes, detailed interaction designs, and development ready assets
  • Apply human centered design through iterative cycles of design and research, supporting empathy studies, concept testing, and usability testing while using customer feedback, analytics, and experiment results to refine the experience
  • Apply State Farm experience architecture, design systems, brand standards, content principles, accessibility requirements, style guides, and pattern libraries to create consistent experiences, while supporting exception requests or new patterns when appropriate
  • Partner with Technology and architecture throughout feasibility assessment, acceptance, development, and delivery by communicating design intent, providing clear specifications, resolving implementation questions, and validating the quality of the delivered experience
  • Present design decisions and recommendations through clear visual, written, and verbal storytelling, enabling stakeholders to understand the design process, provide informed feedback, and align around the proposed experience
  • Work independently under general direction on complex assignments involving experience architecture and detailed design, while serving as a resource to other designers and contributing to continuous improvement of Experience Design methods, tools, and practices Competitive candidates will have the following skills and experience:
  • Three or more years of applicable experience in Product Design, User Experience Design, Interaction Design, Digital Graphic Design, Visual Design, or a related discipline
  • Demonstrated experience applying the user experience and human centered design process to translate customer needs, research, and product direction into usable and testable experiences
  • Experience creating and presenting user flows, journey maps, wireframes, prototypes, detailed interaction designs, and high-fidelity design assets across web, mobile, or other digital form factors
  • Intermediate to advanced proficiency in Figma, including components, variables, libraries, responsive layouts, and interactive prototyping, along with proficiency in FigJam and presentation tools
  • Experience applying established design systems, interaction patterns, brand standards, accessibility requirements, content principles, and experience architecture to product design work
  • Experience using qualitative research, usability findings, customer feedback, analytics, and product data to identify experience problems, support design decisions, and prioritize improvements
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and visual storytelling skills, with the ability to explain design decisions, incorporate feedback, work across disciplines, and independently manage multiple assignments of varying complexity
  • A portfolio demonstrating individual contribution, problem solving, interaction design, prototyping, research informed iteration, collaboration with Product and Technology, and connection to customer or business outcomes

Qualifications

Preferred experience:

  • Experience working in innovation, incubation, emerging technology, new product development, or enterprise experimentation
  • Practical experience using artificial intelligence to support concept exploration, research synthesis, prototyping, design iteration, documentation, or workflow improvement
  • Experience designing, prototyping, or evaluating artificial intelligence enabled products, agents, conversational experiences, or agentic workflows, including user controls, feedback, error recovery, transparency, evaluation criteria, and human oversight
  • Familiarity with Visual Studio Code, OpenAI Codex, Claude Code, or comparable development and agentic coding tools for functional prototyping, workflow automation, and collaboration with technical teams
  • Experience supporting no code and coded proof of concept activities, with working knowledge of HTML, CSS, JSON, design tokens, component libraries, or related front end technologies
  • Experience designing across multiple platforms or form factors and contributing to established design systems, reusable components, or emerging interaction patterns
  • Experience operating within a large and complex enterprise, with State Farm Product Design or Experience Design experience preferred

Items of Note:

  • This role may support multiple innovation initiatives at different stages of maturity and may shift between assignments as concepts progress through experimentation
  • The job may require limited travel through commercial transportation or driving a motor vehicle and may include weekends
  • Participation in company approved educational programs may be expected as applicable for continued professional development
  • A portfolio review will be required for candidates who advance to the interview phase
  • The portfolio should clearly demonstrate the candidate’s individual contribution, design process, interaction decisions, prototyping approach, use of research and data, technical collaboration, iteration, and connection to measurable customer or business outcomes
