Job description

The Controls Engineer is expected to provide design, programming, commissioning, and technical support of automatic machine systems. We require a bachelor's degree in engineering and 2 years' experience. The position requires 25% travel per week.
Duties and Responsibilities of a Controls Engineer:
Design:
Design machine controls systems, including the sizing and selection of variable speed drives, harmonic filters, motors, motor starters, overcurrent protection devices, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), meters, operator interfaces (HMI), and other auxiliary controls using AutoCAD.
Programming:
Program Allen-Bradley, General Electric, and other brands of PLCs and HMI using the manufacturer's programming packages.
Programs must be well organized, documented, and perform all sequence of operations as required for the operation of wire manufacturing machines including drawing machines, annealers, spoolers, electroplaters, bunchers, stranders, payoffs, and others.
Programming of auxiliary controls, meters, and systems such as cooling water, emulsion, quench, and waste treatment is also required.
Commissioning:
Manage the installation and startup of wire manufacturing machines and systems including:
  • Generating wire pull lists as required for control and power wiring
  • Size, select, and specify for purchase the conduit, fittings, wire, and other material required
  • Coordinate the work of mechanical and electrical contractors, as well as other employees
  • Conduct pre-power system checks, power up all systems, and check all devices for proper operation
  • Program and de-bug all drives, PLCs, HMIs, and miscellaneous controls
  • Train operators, managers, and maintenance personnel in the proper operation of equipment

Technical Support:
Provide technical support to maintenance and other personnel for the continuous operation of existing equipment. This includes troubleshooting in the plants, upgrade of obsolete equipment, and other assistance as needed.
Qualifications and Skills of a Controls Engineer:
  • B.S. in Electrical Engineering
  • Use personal computers and software including Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, and various programming packages
  • Work on multiple projects simultaneously
  • Read and interpret wiring diagrams
  • Familiarity with the National Electrical Code and machine safety standards
  • Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Excellent work record, including safety, quality and attendance
  • Positive attitude

Working Conditions:
Work locations will include an office in Camden as well as the various plants within the company. Some overnight travel to distant plants may be required. Working at night and on holidays and weekends is also required.
Physical Requirements:
Must be able to use hand tools, climb ladders, and other tasks as required to work on manufacturing equipment.
Annual salary is $85,000 to $105,000 per year.
