Position Summary
Located 45 minutes from the Nation's Capital, nestled in a history-rich community of southern Maryland, The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) is a two-time Aspen Award-winning institution (top 15% of Community Colleges) with academic programs in over 100 disciplines. CSM is among America's top 100 producers of Minority Associate Degrees in twenty categories, according to Diverse Issues in Higher Education. The Building Services Technician I is responsible for keeping the campus well maintained and cleaned to a high standard. Duties include general building maintenance, cleaning and arranging classrooms for scheduled events, proper disposal of trash and recycling, and operating machines and equipment. This position is entry level and requires the use of basic skills acquired through prior work experience.
Reports to: Building Services Supervisor
The hiring salary for this position will be from the min to mid-point of the salary range advertised. This position is open until filled.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
70% Custodial Services
  • Maintains cleanliness in assigned facilities, including classrooms, restrooms, offices, stairwells, and entrances.
  • Performs tasks such as sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, stripping, waxing, dusting, window cleaning, and carpet extraction.
  • Restocks dispensers with paper products, liners, and hand soap.
  • Empties trash and recycling receptacles and ensures proper disposal.
  • Performs seasonal deep cleaning including exterior window washing and cleaning of science labs.
  • Maintains custodial supply closets in a clean and orderly fashion.

20% Office Moves and Relocation Assistance
  • Assists with moving furniture, boxes, and office equipment during departmental relocations.
  • Uses proper lifting techniques and tools such as dollies and hand trucks.
  • Disassembles and reassembles furniture when necessary.

5% Snow Removal and Seasonal Exterior Support
  • Participates in snow and ice removal using hand tools, tractors, plows, and salt spreaders.
  • Applies ice melt and road salt to walkways and entrances.
  • Works 12-hour shifts as needed during weather emergencies until the campus is reopened.

5% Computer-Based Administrative Tasks
  • Accurately records time and attendance using the college's time entry software.
  • Completes online mandatory training such as safety courses and compliance modules.
  • Completes work order requests via work order systems.

Additional Duties:
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Education and Training
  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Two years of experience in an institutional or commercial setting that has provided the knowledge of procedures for proper use of equipment such as high and low speed buffers, automatic floor scrubbers, upholster extractor, carpet extractor, vacuum cleaner, industrial wet/dry vacuum cleaner, as well as using industrial cleaning and germicidal agents.

Minimum Qualifications and Standards Required
  • Ability to use snow removal equipment.
  • Ability to translate and use hazardous and toxic chemical Material and Safety Data Sheets
  • Maintain a valid Maryland driver's license and maintain insurability under the college liability insurance plan.
  • Currently certified, or ability to successfully complete a CPR/AED course and a stand-alone first-aid course.
  • Ability to lift 75 pounds.
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The work is medium work which requires exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Exposure to a variety of industrial hazardous/toxic chemical cleaning agents. Prolonged standing and exposure of adverse weather conditions year-round.
