Job description

Second Shift Custodian at Mitchell Elementary/Middle School

Under general supervision, performs a variety of general custodial and light groundskeeping work in the care and maintenance of assigned school buildings and facilities. Work involves sweeping, mopping and using vacuum cleaners to clean floors; washing walls, woodwork and fixtures; and policing buildings to empty trash receptacles and pick up debris, etc. Employee is also responsible for requisitioning necessary cleaning supplies. Reports to the Principal or Assistant Principal.

Qualification Requirements

  • General knowledge of the standard methods, materials, and equipment employed in janitorial work.
  • Some knowledge of cleaning procedures and the use of cleaning materials.
  • Ability to follow instructions.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment and initiative in completing work assignments.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.
  • Has a proven attendance record.
  • High school diploma or equivalency preferred.

Essential Job Functions

  • Sweeps sidewalks and walkways outside of buildings; polices grounds, picking up debris; shovels snow and/or applies de-icing compounds to walkways and driveways, as necessary
  • Sweeps, mops, vacuums, strips, waxes, and buffs floor surfaces.
  • Scrubs and cleans bathrooms, including toilets, mirrors, wash basins, urinals, commodes, slop sinks, etc. Fills tissue, towels, soap, and other dispensers, disinfects as needed.
  • Empties trash receptacles; deposits recyclable material in proper receptacles.
  • Dusts furniture, walls, window sills, blinds, and other woodwork.
  • Cleans window, walls, woodwork, blinds, and light fixtures.
  • Cleans drinking fountains.
  • To assemble, set up, and move furniture as required.
  • May open and secure buildings at start and end of workday, respectively; may turn on and off lights at start and end of day, respectively, and adjust heating or air conditioning, as appropriate.
  • Cleans and organizes storage rooms.
  • Unload and store supplies and deliveries.
  • Performs minor maintenance on appliances, as abilities allow.
  • Replaces burned-out light bulbs.
  • Arrange furniture for meetings or other events.
  • Performs related work as required.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be physically able to operate vacuum cleaners, carpet shampooers, brooms, mops, leaf blowers, etc.
  • Must be able to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to push, pull, and carry or otherwise move objects.
  • Requires climbing, stooping, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping and repetitive motion. May require working on ladders.
  • Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately in using janitorial equipment. Requires the ability to handle a variety of items such as janitorial equipment.
  • Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.
  • Requires the ability to talk and hear: (Talking: expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words. Hearing: perceiving nature of sounds by ear.)
  • Physical demand requirements are for medium work.
