What is a window cleaner?

Window cleaners are professionals who specialize in cleaning the glass surfaces of buildings, including windows, skylights, and sometimes mirrors. They use tools like squeegees, scrapers, and cleaning solutions to remove dirt, grime, and streaks from both exterior and interior windows. Window cleaners may work on residential homes, commercial buildings, or high-rise structures, often employing ladders, water-fed poles, or even suspended platforms for taller buildings. Their work helps maintain the appearance of properties and ensures clear, unobstructed views while also promoting window longevity.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a window cleaner, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Window Cleaner, you need physical fitness, attention to detail, and knowledge of safety procedures, with some employers preferring a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with cleaning solutions, squeegees, extension poles, ladders, and, for high-rise work, safety harnesses and rope descent systems is essential. Excellent time management, customer service, and communication skills help build client trust and ensure efficient service. These skills and qualities are crucial for delivering thorough, safe, and professional cleaning results in a variety of environments.

What are some common challenges window cleaners face when working on high-rise buildings?

Window cleaners working on high-rise buildings often encounter challenges such as unpredictable weather conditions, strict safety protocols, and the need for specialized equipment like harnesses and suspended platforms. Adapting to rapidly changing weather, especially wind, requires quick decision-making to ensure safety and efficiency. Additionally, teamwork and communication are crucial, as many tasks require coordination with building management and other crew members to maintain safety and minimize disruptions.

Job description

Job Overview

  • Company: New Kappa City Construction Inc.
  • Pay: $68.00– $93.00 per hour, depending on project, prevailing-wage classification, experience, and qualifications
  • Location: Millis, MA / Project Sites Across Massachusetts
  • Employment Type: Full-Time
  • Primary Work: Commercial and government doors, windows, exterior systems, and commercial hardware
  • Required Certification: OSHA 10

The Opportunity

New Kappa City Construction Inc. is seeking an experienced Lead Carpenter who can take ownership of field work, lead crews, and deliver high-quality commercial door and window installations.

This is primarily a Lead Carpenter position for someone who understands how to solve problems in the field, maintain production, work safely, and help develop less-experienced team members.

Our current work is focused heavily on commercial and government door and window projects, including fiberglass doors, metal doors, fiberglass and metal windows, storm doors, commercial hardware, and related exterior work.

Experience with storefronts, curtain walls, glazing, or siding is valuable, but candidates do not need to be experts in every exterior system. We are willing to train experienced carpenters on specialized systems when they already have strong core carpentry skills.

We are also growing our field team, so skilled Carpenters who may not yet be ready for a Lead Carpenter position are encouraged to apply.

What You Will Do

  • Lead daily field activities on commercial and government construction projects.
  • Direct and coordinate small carpentry crews.
  • Install and replace commercial and exterior:
  • Fiberglass doors.
  • Metal doors.
  • Storm doors.
  • Fiberglass windows.
  • Metal windows.
  • Commercial door hardware.
  • Complete demolition, removal, preparation, installation, fastening, sealing, caulking, and finish work.
  • Evaluate existing field conditions and adjust installations when openings are not level, plumb, square, or consistent with plans.
  • Safely operate common carpentry and installation tools, including saws, grinders, hammer drills, oscillating tools, and related equipment.
  • Organize installation sequencing and assign work based on project priorities.
  • Maintain crew productivity while protecting workmanship and safety standards.
  • Train and mentor Carpenters and less-experienced field employees.
  • Inspect completed work and correct deficiencies before punch-list or owner review.
  • Communicate job-site issues clearly with project leadership.
  • Work professionally in occupied housing, government facilities, and active construction environments.

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years of professional carpentry or related commercial installation experience.
  • Strong hands-on experience installing commercial or exterior doors and/or windows.
  • Previous experience leading crews, supervising field work, mentoring other Carpenters, or taking ownership of job-site execution.
  • Ability to accurately read a tape measure and understand:
  • Layout.
  • Plumb.
  • Level.
  • Square.
  • Fastening.
  • Installation sequencing.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and safe tool-handling skills.
  • Ability to troubleshoot real-world field conditions rather than relying only on ideal drawings or openings.
  • Ability to independently complete work and direct other crew members.
  • OSHA 10 certification.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous Lead Carpenter, Foreman, or crew-lead experience.
  • Commercial door hardware experience, including panic hardware and related systems.
  • Government, federal, municipal, housing-authority, or prevailing-wage project experience.
  • Storefront, curtain-wall, glazing, or metal-window experience.
  • Siding or exterior-envelope experience.
  • OSHA 30.
  • Aerial Lift certification.
  • Fall Protection certification.

Storefront and curtain-wall experience are preferred, not required. Strong commercial carpenters with excellent door/window experience are encouraged to apply.

Compensation & Benefits

  • $68.00– $93.00 per hour depending on prevailing-wage project requirements, classification, experience, and qualifications.
  • Weekly pay.
  • Access to high-value prevailing-wage projects.
  • 401(k) retirement plan with employer matching.
  • Training and certification opportunities.
  • OSHA, Fall Protection, Aerial Lift, and manufacturer training opportunities.
  • Company uniforms provided.
  • Opportunity to grow with an experienced commercial construction company.

What Success Looks Like

A successful Lead Carpenter will be able to:

  • Walk onto a project and understand how the work should be completed.
  • Identify field problems before they create rework.
  • Install doors and windows correctly even when existing conditions are imperfect.
  • Use tools safely and professionally.
  • Keep a crew organized and productive.
  • Teach and develop other Carpenters.
  • Maintain high-quality workmanship.
  • Deliver clean, complete work with minimal callbacks.
