Wind Resource Engineer information

What does a wind resource engineer do?

A Wind Resource Engineer is responsible for assessing and analyzing potential sites for wind energy projects by studying wind patterns, collecting meteorological data, and using specialized software to forecast wind resources. Their work helps determine the feasibility and efficiency of wind farm locations, ensuring optimal energy production. They also collaborate with environmental scientists, project managers, and engineers to select suitable turbine placements and design wind farms that maximize output while minimizing environmental impact.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a wind resource engineer?

To thrive as a Wind Resource Engineer, you need a strong background in atmospheric science, data analysis, and renewable energy concepts, typically supported by a degree in engineering or a related field. Proficiency with wind modeling software such as WAsP or WindPRO, as well as experience with GIS and meteorological data, is essential. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and clear communication help engineers interpret data and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams. These competencies ensure accurate wind resource assessments, optimize project feasibility, and contribute to the successful development of wind energy projects.

How does a wind resource engineer typically collaborate with other teams during a wind farm project?

Wind Resource Engineers work closely with project developers, environmental specialists, and data analysts throughout the lifecycle of a wind farm project. They coordinate with developers to assess site feasibility, share resource assessment data with environmental teams to address potential impacts, and provide technical input to construction and operations teams to optimize turbine placement. Effective communication and teamwork are essential, as their analyses directly influence project design, permitting, and energy yield predictions.

Key responsibilities

  • Architect and own scalable, cloud-native data pipeline solutions integrating data systems across the SDP platform

  • Lead the design, implementation, and delivery of data collection, pre-analysis, analysis, forecasting, alert, and VMM pipelines, ensuring data quality and reliability

  • Lead integration of measurement systems with enterprise IT platforms and oversee end-to-end feature delivery, including code review and enforcement of security and performance standards

Job description

RWE Americas, LLC

To start as soon as possible, full time, permanent

Functional area: IT / Digital

Remuneration: Exempt

Digital Solutions is responsible for the development and management of RWE Americas application and custom software development portfolio. These applications power our day-to-day business, connecting operational data to enable business decisions and drive outcomes that improve the development, performance and availability of over 160 renewable energy sites with over 13 GW of wind, solar, and battery assets.

Role Responsibilities
  • Technical Leadership & Architecture
    • Architect and own scalable, cloud-native data pipeline solutions integrating data systems across the SDP platform
    • Define system architecture, data flows, and service boundaries across ingestion, pre-analysis, analysis, alerting, and monitoring pipelines
    • Create and maintain architecture diagrams, blueprints, and reusable design patterns that guide development teams
    • Drive technology decisions, platform standards, and architectural guidelines; lead architecture reviews and technical decisions
  • Lead design and implementation of data collection, pre-analysis, analysis, forecasting, alert, and VMM pipelines, ensuring data quality, reliability, and validation
  • Own solution delivery on Azure-based platforms including Azure Functions, pipeline scheduling, cloud storage, and data lake integration across DEV, UAT, and PROD environments
  • Define and enforce best practices for CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure automation, and observability frameworks (logging, alerting, monitoring dashboards)
  • System Integration & Software Delivery
    • Lead integration of measurement systems (lidar, met mast, sensor networks) with enterprise IT platforms, ensuring data consistency, reliability, and traceability
    • Lead endโ€‘toโ€‘end feature delivery (Design โ†’ Build โ†’ Deploy โ†’ Operate); review and approve code across multiple services, enforcing security, performance, and coding standards
  • Technical Governance, Stakeholder Collaboration & Mentorship
    • Define and enforce engineering standards, coding guidelines, and architectural patterns; ensure compliance with enterprise architecture and data governance policies.
    • Act as primary technical liaison between product owners, business stakeholders, and development teams, translating business requirements into technical architectures and delivery plans
  • Mentor engineers across multiple levels; lead knowledge sharing, documentation, and capabilityโ€‘building initiatives that foster a culture of engineering excellence and continuous improvement
Job Requirements and Experiences
  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent industry certification/experience
  • One or more of the following certifications strongly preferred
    • Microsoft Azure certifications (e.g., AZ-900, AZ-204, AZ-305) or equivalent cloud platform credential
  • Minimum 7 years of relevant software engineering or data platform experience, including handsโ€‘on development and technical leadership roles
  • Proven experience designing and managing complex, multiโ€‘stage data pipelines (ingestion, analysis, forecasting, alerting) with strong expertise in data cleaning, transformation, and validation workflows
  • Demonstrated experience architecting and delivering solutions on Azureโ€‘based platforms, including Kubernetes (AKS), containers, Azure Functions, data lake integration, and multiโ€‘environment deployment management
  • Experience with distributed systems, microservices, messaging systems (e.g., RabbitMQ), eventโ€‘driven architecture, and API design and integration
  • Experience in designing access control for applications, specifically design and/or sign off on access control schemes for humanโ€‘toโ€‘system, and systemโ€‘toโ€‘system access
  • Experience leading complex, enterpriseโ€‘scale IT implementations involving coordination of multiple workstreams and multiโ€‘level stakeholder communications, delivering in Agile or hybrid methodologies
  • Strong background in frontend development using React and TypeScript, backend development using C#, Python, Terraform, or equivalent infrastructure as code experience; experience with SQL querying, largeโ€‘scale datasets, and data formats such as Parquet and CSV
