Wind Engineer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a wind engineer?

To thrive as a Wind Engineer, you need a strong background in mechanical, civil, or electrical engineering, often supported by a relevant degree and experience in renewable energy projects. Familiarity with CAD software, wind resource assessment tools, and industry standards like IEC 61400 is typically required. Analytical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication are essential soft skills for collaborating with teams and stakeholders. These skills and qualifications enable Wind Engineers to design, optimize, and implement efficient wind energy solutions while ensuring safety and regulatory compliance.

What is the difference between Wind Engineer vs Wind Turbine Technician?

AspectWind EngineerWind Turbine Technician
Required CredentialsBachelor's degree in engineering or related field; often professional engineering licenseTechnical diploma or associate degree; specialized training
Work EnvironmentDesign, analysis, project planning; office and field site visitsOn-site maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs at wind farms
Employer & Industry UsageWind energy companies, engineering firms, project developersWind farm operators, maintenance service providers

Wind Engineers focus on designing and planning wind energy projects, requiring engineering credentials and working in both office and field environments. Wind Turbine Technicians primarily perform maintenance and repairs on turbines, working directly on-site. Both roles are essential in the wind energy industry but differ in responsibilities and required qualifications.

What are some common challenges wind engineers face when planning new wind farm projects?

Wind Engineers often encounter challenges such as accurately assessing wind resources, navigating complex environmental regulations, and coordinating with multiple stakeholders including landowners, utility companies, and local authorities. Site selection can be particularly demanding due to considerations like terrain, wildlife impact, and grid connectivity. Effective communication and problem-solving skills are essential, as Wind Engineers must collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams to balance technical, environmental, and economic factors throughout the project lifecycle.

What does a wind engineer do?

A Wind Engineer specializes in the design, analysis, and implementation of wind energy systems, primarily focusing on wind turbines and wind farms. They assess potential sites for wind energy generation, analyze wind patterns, and ensure that wind turbines are efficiently and safely installed and maintained. Wind Engineers also work on optimizing turbine performance, minimizing environmental impact, and complying with regulations. Their work plays a crucial role in advancing renewable energy and reducing reliance on fossil fuels.

How much do wind engineers make?

Wind engineers typically earn a median annual salary of around $80,000 to $120,000, depending on experience, education, and location. Senior roles or those with specialized skills in turbine design or project management can earn higher salaries, often exceeding $150,000. Many wind engineers also benefit from industry certifications and work in renewable energy environments.

Description

About Envision Group

Envision Group is a global Greentech company operating across Europe, North America, and Asia. Guided by our mission to "solve challenges for a sustainable future," we design, sell, and operate smart wind turbines while advancing green chemicals to reduce the global carbon footprint. We are committed to wind and solar power, electric batteries, and Green Hydrogen - with the goal of building a zero-carbon world.

Green Hydrogen is central to our net-zero strategy. Where conventional hydrogen production generates significant CO emissions, our technologies use renewable energy and water to produce hydrogen emission-free. We are dedicated to improving efficiency, reducing costs, and scaling manufacturing to meet growing global demand.

The Role

We are hiring a Quality Engineer to join our established H2 Center of Excellence (COE) in Burlington, MA. This is a greenfield opportunity: you will help design and implement the quality infrastructure that underpins water electrolyzer product development and manufacturing from the ground up. You will report to the Quality Director and work closely with Envision's global quality teams, with regular collaboration with manufacturing and supply chain partners across our international operations, including teams in Asia.

Key Responsibilities

Supplier & Incoming Quality

  • Partner with Engineering, Procurement, and Supply Chain to define supplier quality requirements and ensure incoming components meet specification.
  • Develop and execute Incoming Quality Control (IQC) inspection workflows and acceptance criteria for critical electrolyzer components, including MEAs, GDLs, bipolar plates, and seals.
  • Qualify suppliers through audits, first-article inspection (FAI), and APQP/PPAP processes.

Process & Product Quality

  • Apply statistical methods - SPC, DOE, MSA/Gage R&R - to verify component designs and optimize manufacturing processes.
  • Lead design verification and validation (DV/PV) planning and execution, including FMEA/PFMEA development and control plan creation.
  • Drive root-cause analysis and corrective action (8D/CAPA) for non-conformance across suppliers, incoming inspection, and production.
  • Design and implement inspection workflows to ensure reliability, performance, and quality of product components.

Quality Management System

  • Maintain and enforce ISO 9001 QMS documentation, audit schedules, and corrective action tracking.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable electrolyzer and hydrogen safety standards, including ISO 22734, IEC 62282, and NFPA 2.
  • Collaborate with global QMS teams to leverage existing Envision corporate quality infrastructure.

Reporting & Continuous Improvement

  • Collect, analyze, and report quality metrics; use data and risk modeling to prioritize improvement initiatives and communicate results to stakeholders.
  • Identify gaps in quality processes and systems; recommend tooling and headcount to support team growth.
  • Maintain current knowledge of ASQ standards, ISO developments, and emerging standards in the green hydrogen sector.

What Success Looks Like in Year 1

  • Quality documentation framework and inspection workflows established for the Burlington COE (Center of Excellence).
  • Supplier quality requirements defined and communicated for top-10 critical component families.
  • DV/PV plans developed and in place for first product builds.
  • QMS audit cadence running on schedule with no major outstanding non-conformance.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
  • 3-7 years of hands-on quality engineering experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Practical command of core quality tools: FMEA/PFMEA, SPC, MSA/Gage R&R, 8D/CAPA, and control plans.
  • Experience managing ISO 9001 QMS documentation, audits, and corrective action systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to solve complex quality problems with rigor, urgency, and creativity.
  • Strong communication skills across engineering, supply chain, and executive audiences.

Preferred

  • Master's degree in a relevant engineering discipline.
  • ASQ Certified Quality Engineer (CQE) or demonstrated functional equivalence.
  • Experience in the fuel cell, PEM electrolyzer, or hydrogen technology sector; familiarity with stack components (MEA, GDL, bipolar plates, seals).
  • Working knowledge of hydrogen-specific standards: ISO 22734, IEC 62282, NFPA 2, or ASME pressure equipment codes.
  • Experience with APQP/PPAP, Design of Experiments (DOE), or Six Sigma (Green or Black Belt).
  • Proficiency in Mandarin - preferred given regular collaboration with global manufacturing and supply chain partners in Asia.

Compensation & Benefits

Salary: $110,000 - $160,000 + Annual Performance Bonus, depending on experience

Full benefits package includes:

  • Fully paid medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • Short and long-term disability coverage
  • Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs) for medical, dependent care, and commuter expenses
  • Additional life insurance options
  • 401(k) retirement savings plan with employer match
  • Generous vacation and paid time off (PTO) policy
  • 8 federal holidays plus 4 floating holidays
  • Sick leave
  • Employer contributions toward monthly benefit premiums and gym membership
