As of Jun 5, 2026, the average hourly pay for win32 system programming in the United States is $49.75, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $36.06 and $62.26 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is the difference between Win32 System Programming vs Windows Application Developer?

AspectWin32 System ProgrammingWindows Application Developer
Primary FocusDeveloping low-level system components, drivers, and APIsCreating user-facing applications with GUI and business logic
Required SkillsC/C++, Windows API, system architectureC#, .NET, Visual Studio, UI design
Work EnvironmentSystem-level development, often in kernel mode or driver developmentApplication development in user mode, often with IDEs and frameworks
Industry UsageOperating system development, device drivers, system utilitiesDesktop applications, enterprise software, consumer apps

Win32 System Programming focuses on low-level system components and APIs, requiring knowledge of system architecture and C/C++. In contrast, Windows Application Developers build user-facing applications using higher-level languages like C# and frameworks such as .NET. Both roles are essential in the Windows ecosystem but serve different development needs and environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Win32 System Programmer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Win32 System Programmer, you need a strong grasp of C/C++ programming, operating system fundamentals, and deep knowledge of the Windows API. Familiarity with development tools like Visual Studio, debugging utilities, and version control systems is essential. Analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective problem-solving are key soft skills that distinguish top performers in this field. These skills ensure the development of robust, efficient, and secure Windows applications that interact closely with the operating system.

What is Win32 system programming?

Win32 system programming involves developing software that interacts directly with the Windows operating system using the Windows API (Application Programming Interface), specifically the 32-bit versions. Programmers use languages like C or C++ to access low-level system features such as memory management, process control, file operations, and threading. This type of programming is essential for creating high-performance applications, device drivers, and utilities that require direct access to Windows system resources.

What are common challenges faced by Win32 System Programmers when working on large-scale applications?

Win32 System Programmers often encounter challenges related to managing low-level system resources, such as memory, threads, and synchronization objects, especially as applications scale. Ensuring compatibility across different Windows versions and handling legacy APIs can add complexity. Debugging and diagnosing performance bottlenecks or subtle bugs in multithreaded environments also require deep expertise and attention to detail. Collaboration with other developers, such as UI or network specialists, is common to ensure seamless integration and system stability.

Job description

About Us:

Cytracom delivers infrastructure software purpose-built to empower managed service providers (MSPs) and IT professionals (ITSPs) with cloud solutions that connect and secure both traditional and hybrid workforces.
Our secure access service edge (SASE) solution provides identity-based network security and connectivity within a single platform that enables businesses to deploy zero-trust networks, enforce compliance and eliminate traditional firewalls and VPNs.
Our unified communications suite (UCaaS) uniquely aligns with the operating needs of MSPs and enables their customers to experience seamless communication and collaboration regardless of physical location.

Here's a closer look at this key role:

Design, implement, and optimize robust cross-platform agents for Windows and macOS environments, focusing on kernel-level networking, system extensions, and low-level system integration. Leverage deep expertise in Windows and macOS kernel development, networking stacks, and system-level programming to deliver secure, high-performance agents that seamlessly integrate with operating system networking and security frameworks.

Responsibilities
  • Architect, develop, and maintain native agents for Windows and macOS platforms, utilizing platform-specific APIs and kernel interfaces.
  • Design and implement kernel-level networking solutions using Windows Filtering Platform (WFP) and macOS Network Extensions.
  • Develop Windows drivers and system components using the Windows Driver Kit (WDK) and Win32 APIs.
  • Create and maintain macOS system extensions and leverage BSD networking stack capabilities including packet filter frameworks.
  • Build cross-platform agent frameworks using Rust and Python with Tauri/React-based user interfaces.
  • Analyze and optimize network performance by understanding Windows and macOS kernel networking decisions and packet routing.
  • Implement and maintain observability stacks (metrics, logs, events, traces) for cross-platform agent monitoring and debugging.
  • Debug complex production issues involving kernel-level interactions, driver behavior, and system extension functionality.
  • Collaborate with other engineers to deliver seamless cross-platform features and maintain API contracts for the ControlOne platform.
  • Ensure security and compliance best practices are embedded throughout the agent lifecycle, including code signing and platform security requirements.
  • Automate build, deployment, and testing workflows for multi-platform agent distribution using CI/CD pipelines.
  • Write clear, maintainable documentation for kernel-level development and contribute to operational excellence across Windows and macOS environments.
Core Competencies
  • Advanced proficiency with Windows Driver Kit (WDK) for kernel-mode driver development
  • Deep expertise in Windows Filtering Platform (WFP) for network packet filtering and inspection
  • Strong knowledge of Win32 API and Windows system programming
  • Understanding of Windows networking stack architecture and kernel networking components
  • Experience with Windows security models, code signing, and driver certification processes
  • Expertise in macOS/BSD networking stack including packet filter frameworks
  • Proficiency with Network Extension and System Extension frameworks
  • Understanding of macOS kernel architecture and XNU kernel development
  • Experience with macOS security frameworks, entitlements, and system integrity protection
  • Knowledge of macOS distribution and notarization requirements
  • Advanced proficiency in Rust for system-level agent development and Python for backend integration
  • Experience with Tauri/React for cross-platform user interface development
  • Strong understanding of cross-platform build systems and deployment strategies
  • Deep understanding of computer networking (TCP/IP, HTTP, DNS, routing protocols, firewalls, load balancing, security)
  • Expertise in modern observability stacks (Prometheus, Grafana, OpenTelemetry, ELK/Loki) for cross-platform monitoring
  • Performance analysis and troubleshooting using platform-specific tools (Windows Performance Toolkit, macOS Instruments, network analyzers)
  • Debugging complex kernel-level issues using crash dumps, kernel debugging tools, and system tracing
  • Experience with version control (Git), CI/CD systems (GitHub Actions, CircleCI), and ticket management (Jira, Azure DevOps)

Our Benefits:

  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance is available
  • 401K
  • Disability and Life Insurance
  • Paid vacations and holidays
  • Flexible PTO policy
  • Casual, laid-back work environment
