These developers often work closely with biologists, ecologists, and conservation organizations to ensure that the software meets the needs of fieldwork and research. They may also implement geographic information systems (GIS), mobile data collection apps, and machine learning algorithms to help monitor and protect wildlife.

How does a Wildlife Conservation Software Developer typically collaborate with field researchers and conservationists?

Wildlife Conservation Software Developers frequently work closely with field researchers and conservationists to understand their data collection needs, tailor software tools, and ensure seamless integration of technology in fieldwork. Collaboration often involves regular meetings to review requirements, gather user feedback, and troubleshoot issues that arise during field deployment. These developers may also conduct training sessions and provide technical support to non-technical users, making strong communication skills and adaptability essential for success in the role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Wildlife Conservation Software Developer, and why are they important?

A Wildlife Conservation Software Developer needs strong programming skills (such as Python, Java, or R), experience with data analysis, and a background in environmental science or a related field. Familiarity with GIS software, open-source conservation tools, and cloud platforms like AWS or Google Cloud is often required, alongside certifications in software development or data science. Excellent problem-solving, collaboration, and communication skills help bridge the gap between conservationists and technical teams. These competencies ensure the development of effective, user-friendly software solutions that support wildlife research and conservation efforts.

As a leading water technology company with 23,000 employees operating in over 150 countries, Xylem is at the forefront of addressing the world's most critical water challenges. We invite passionate individuals to join our team, dedicated to exceeding customer expectations through innovative and sustainable solutions.

Xylem is a global water technology company focused on solving some of the world's most important water challenges. We're looking for a curious, self-starting, Mechanical Design Engineer to be a member of our Product Development team that designs and supports mechanical parts and assemblies used in gas metering and communication systems.

In this role, you'll contribute to new product development from early concepts through production launch, and then support the products once they are in the field. You'll work with a cross-functional team to develop rugged, high-volume electromechanical products for outdoor use.

This is a great opportunity for an engineer who enjoys hands-on product development, collaborative problem solving, and seeing designs move into production.

You will help:

  • Design mechanical components, assemblies, interfaces, adapters, and environmental packaging for rugged outdoor electromechanical products.
  • Create and maintain drawings, specifications, and manufacturing documentation.
  • Use engineering tools such as 3D CAD, tolerance analysis, and FEA to support design decisions.
  • Participate in product design reviews and improve designs based on team feedback.
  • Work closely with electrical, software, firmware, systems, manufacturing, product management, quality, testing, and supply chain teams.
  • Support prototype builds, testing, validation, and regulatory activities.
  • Assist with troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and resolution of product or manufacturing issues.
  • Support transition to manufacturing, including tooling reviews and design-for-manufacturing considerations.
  • Collaborate with suppliers and manufacturing partners to support product development and production needs.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in new product development or mechanical engineering.
  • Experience with 3D CAD modeling software and product data management tools.
  • Experience with product testing, validation, troubleshooting, and root cause analysis.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work well across teams.
  • Proficiency with standard Microsoft Office tools.

We would especially like to hear from candidates with experience in any of the following:

  • Designing products for rugged environmental, metering, sensor-based, or similar high-volume electromechanical applications.
  • Manufacturing methods such as injection molding, casting, machining, stampings, or powdered metal.
  • Design for automated assembly and manufacturing processes.
  • Creo (Pro/ENGINEER) and Windchill.
  • Finite element analysis (FEA).
  • Design or fabrication of test fixtures and equipment.
  • Industry or regulatory standards such as ANSI, AWWA, UL, or Intrinsic Safety requirements.
