Job Summary:
Responsible for program eligibility determination and certification of clients utilizing CT-WIC system and WIC policies and procedures. Provides nutrition counseling, consults with physicians, other health care professionals and outside agencies, as appropriate, to assist in coordinating individual client's nutritional and other health care needs.
Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities:
Responsible for Program Eligibility Determination and Certification of Clients.
  • Assures proper procedures are followed.
  • Acts as "Competent Professional Authority" on staff with regard to medical nutritional risk assessment.
  • Develops an appropriate dietary program for each client based on nutritional needs and consideration of other pertinent variables.
  • Tailors WIC food package to meet individual needs.
  • Maintains communication with health care providers regarding client concerns or missing information.
  • Collects and inputs required data into CT-WIC system.
  • Schedules subsequent appointments and issues WIC benefits.

Responsible for Nutrition Education of WIC Clients.
  • Performs primary and secondary nutrition contacts, including diet assessment and counseling, by telephone or in-person.
  • Assures that all contacts are provided and documented.
  • Identifies and monitors high-risk clients, developing individualized care plans.
  • Refers to appropriate agencies.
  • Orients clients about WIC Program and its regulations. Explains use of WIC benefits, food package, store list and food list.
  • Collects and inputs required data into CT-WIC System.

Coordinates satellite operations.
  • Responsible for equipment transfer and set up, and troubleshoots any computer problems.
  • Responsible for overall provision of WIC services.

Contributes to Department Outreach and Public Relation efforts.
  • Participates in community and hospital functions such as health fairs and community projects.
  • Maintains communications with health care providers regarding WIC nutrition issues.
  • Precepts nutrition students.

Assist in the development and implementation of nutrition education materials and nutrition services documents.
  • Designs and prepares bulletin boards, newsletters, and handouts.
  • Involved in various client surveys, signups.
  • Involved in data collection on an "as needed basis".

Performs other related duties.
  • Keeps up-to-date on current developments in pediatric and prenatal nutrition and changes in federal and state regulations which impact WIC services.
  • Participates in departmental meetings.
  • Attends in-service educational programs, mandatories and seminars.
  • Performs other departmental duties as assigned.

Educational / Minimum Requirements:
Bachelor's Degree in Dietetics or Nutrition from an accredited institution with a major in foods and nutrition, community nutrition, nutrition education or nutritional sciences. One year clinical experience, preferred.
State/Federal Mandated Licensure or Certification Requirements:
None
Bristol Hospital Mandated Educational Requirements:
General orientation at time of hire. Fire/Safety/Infection Control annually. Other programs as mandated by Bristol Health.
Special Requirements:
Travel to and work at any site in the coverage area as needed.
Physical Requirements:
Extended sitting, together with occasional bending, reaching and stooping.
Work Environment:
Normal office conditions with adequate lighting and ventilation. Includes customer contact and telephone use. Exposure to patient elements.
Cognitive Requirements:
Excellent oral and written communication skills. Good interpersonal skills.
