A Wheel Builder is responsible for assembling, repairing, and maintaining bicycle or vehicle wheels. This involves lacing spokes, truing rims, tensioning spokes, and ensuring wheels are properly aligned. They use specialized tools to adjust spoke tension and diagnose structural issues. Wheel Builders work in bike shops, manufacturing facilities, or repair centers. Attention to detail and precision are essential for producing high-quality, durable wheels.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a wheel builder?

To thrive as a Wheel Builder, you need strong mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and manual dexterity, often supported by experience in bicycle mechanics or wheel assembly. Familiarity with truing stands, spoke wrenches, and tension meters, as well as industry certifications such as those from the Professional Bicycle Mechanics Association (PBMA), are highly valuable. Strong problem-solving abilities, patience, and a commitment to quality craftsmanship are crucial soft skills in this field. These competencies ensure precise, reliable wheel assemblies that meet safety and performance standards for customers.
