Job description

The Salvation Army Mission Statement:

BASIC PURPOSE
The purpose of this position is to assist in the daily operations of a thrift store retail outlet, customer service, cash handling, stocking.
All incumbents accepted for the position of Thrift Store Clerk will also be trained for the position of Sorter and will interchange positions as needed.
Primary responsibility is to create and maintain a friendly, inviting, clean and professional atmosphere that encourages customers to want to frequently return The Salvation Army to make purchases.
The manager is expected to be proficient in customer service, personnel, merchandising, and administrative duties to be an exceptionally responsible person. The ultimate test of a manager's success is sales that are steadily increasing.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Cash Register/POS system
  2. Cash handling opening and closing procedures
  3. Great customer service (friendly, polite, and helpful attitude)
  4. Keep clothing racks stocked, neat, and orderly.
  5. Stock household and other miscellaneous items
  6. Stock shoes, purses, belts, hats, books.
  7. Keep aisles clean, clear, and picked-up
  8. Keep shelves clean, orderly and stocked.
  9. Participate in general store housekeeping (i.e. vacuuming, sweeping, and general cleaning)
  10. Remove merchandise according to policy
  11. Process merchandise/donations upon request
  12. Help accept donations upon request.
  13. Other assigned duties

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND OTHER QUALIFICATIONS REQUIREMENTS
CUSTOMER SERVICE
  1. Insure that every customer is properly greeted and acknowledged
  2. Insure that every customer is given assistance locating items
  3. Insure that customers are directed regarding any items they may have for donation
  4. Insure that customers are acknowledged for their patronage
  5. Insure that employees are treated in a friendly and enthusiastic manner
  6. Diplomatically handle customer complaints and concerns regarding store policy and procedures; maintain at all times Salvation Army standards for quality and customer relations

PERSONNEL
  1. Responsible to assist Director of Production & Retail or the Corps Officer(s)
  2. Interviewing of new applicants
  3. Annual review and performance evaluation
  4. Maintaining written records of employee incidents, positive and negative feedback and discussions pertaining to job performance or corrective actions
  5. Reporting all disciplinary matters up to and including termination
  6. Orientation and training of new personnel
  7. Scheduling of personnel work schedule
  8. Timecard submission checking for accuracy.
  9. Instruction and supervision of employees, volunteers assigned to the thrift store according the TSA policy and procedure regarding job related duties.
  10. Enforce dress code.
  11. Orientate and supervise employees from community work programs and volunteers assigned to your store.
  12. Supervise truck driver's activities in store. Make sure their time schedule is kept. Make sure all merchandise is being handled in appropriate manner, reporting breakage or improper loading/unloading/transporting issues.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND OTHER QUALIFICATIONS REQUIREMENTS
  1. Responsible to monitor and control the quality and preferences of merchandise for the customer/demographics.
  2. Responsible for the effective displaying of all store merchandise
  3. Clothing racks, furniture, glassware, etc.
  4. Window and wall displays
  5. Maintain a fully stocked and balanced inventory on the floor racks as well as a reserve in the stock-room/area. Fully stocked = 1" between hangers with no empty spaces.
  6. Coordinate the "mark-down" and "pulling" procedures of merchandise on a daily basis according to guidelines set by the administration.
  7. Adjust length of "mark down" and "pulling" procedure within guidelines to meet fluctuations in inventory volume. Insure inventory is not pulled unties there is adequate back-up stock to keep floor racks full.
  8. Coordinate "specials" with processing department within guidelines set by Administration.
  9. Education Requirements: GED or High School Graduate
  10. Skills: Handling and counting cash with accuracy; knowledge of current clothing trends and styles; merchandising skills, strong customer service skills;
  11. To be successful in this position, the incumbent must stay busy while on the work floor. Sections of the store will be assigned to each clerk for responsibility of stocking, cleanliness, rag-out procedures, and busy work habits. You will be evaluated for your job performance.
  12. It is expected of every employee to be familiar with The Salvation Army Western Territory Handbook for Employees. Questions regarding any portions not understood should be directed to your direct supervisor.
  13. All employees, both full and part time will be present at scheduled employee meetings as part of their work responsibilities. Full compensation for those who are off on meeting days will be given for the length of the meeting. Reasons for non-attendance must be approved by the administration.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  1. Physical Requirements: Must be able to lift up to 25 lbs occasionally up to 35lbs with help.
  2. 90% of the time spent working will be standing, lifting, bending, walking, and reaching.
