What are some common challenges faced by Welding Engineering Managers, and how can they effectively address them?

Welding Engineering Managers often encounter challenges such as ensuring welding quality across diverse projects, keeping up with evolving industry standards, and managing cross-functional teams with varying skill levels. Effective managers address these by implementing rigorous inspection protocols, fostering ongoing training for their teams, and maintaining strong communication between engineering, production, and quality assurance departments. Staying updated on the latest welding technologies and codes also helps anticipate issues and drive process improvements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Welding Engineering Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Welding Engineering Manager, you need in-depth expertise in welding processes, metallurgy, and engineering principles, typically supported by a bachelor's degree in welding engineering or a related field. Familiarity with industry standards (such as AWS or ASME codes), welding simulation software, and relevant certifications like Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) are highly valuable. Strong leadership, effective communication, and project management skills enable successful team coordination and problem-solving. These competencies are essential for ensuring high-quality welds, maintaining safety standards, and leading engineering teams to meet project goals efficiently.

What is the difference between Welding Engineering Manager vs Welding Engineer?

AspectWelding Engineering ManagerWelding Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires a bachelor's degree in welding engineering or related field, with management experienceRequires a bachelor's degree in welding engineering, materials science, or similar

Job description

Sedron Technologies is hiring a talented Manufacturing Engineering Manager in Sedro-Woolley, WA!
Sedron is a leading provider of circular waste management technologies for agricultural manure and municipal biosolids processing, deploying facilities across several North American regions. Since its founding in 2014, Sedron has pioneered innovative solutions, including the patented Varcor® system, to transform waste into clean water, organic fertilizer, and carbon-negative commodities. With strong engineering expertise, Sedron's processes reduce nutrient pollution, lower operational expenses, and promote sustainability at a fraction of traditional costs.
The Manufacturing Engineering Manager reports to the VP of Manufacturing and leads engineering support for Sedron's welded fabrication and manufacturing operations. This role carries accountability for welding code compliance, manufacturing process improvement, quality systems, and the development of a team of Manufacturing Engineers and Certified Welding Inspectors.
The Manager drives continuous improvement across fabrication and assembly processes, reducing defects, scrap, and cycle time while ensuring all processes consistently meet customer, safety, and regulatory requirements. This position plays a central role in new product introduction, capital equipment decisions, and building a culture of technical excellence and standardized work.
Because we design, build, commission, and operate our technologies, we are looking for individuals who can meet the following essential functions of the position:
  • Lead and develop a team of Manufacturing Engineers and Certified Welding Inspectors (CWIs) in support of welded fabrication, assembly, and production operations.
  • Drive compliance with applicable AWS welding codes, standards, and customer specifications across manufacturing processes and documentation.
  • Oversee development, qualification, and implementation of Welding Procedure Specifications (WPSs), Procedure Qualification Records (PQRs), and welder/operator qualifications.
  • Partner cross-functionally with operations, quality, design engineering, and supply chain to improve manufacturability, throughput, and on-time delivery.
  • Identify and implement continuous improvement initiatives to reduce scrap, rework, cycle time, and welding defects.
  • Provide technical leadership in resolving complex welding and fabrication issues, including fit-up, distortion, weld quality, and process variation.
  • Support new product introduction by reviewing designs for weldability, manufacturability, tooling needs, and code compliance.
  • Manage tooling, fixturing, capital equipment, and automation projects to improve process repeatability and production efficiency.
  • Establish, track, and report key manufacturing metrics such as first-pass yield, labor efficiency, defect rates, and capacity performance.
  • Ensure manufacturing processes support required inspection methods, including visual inspection, dimensional verification, and NDT requirements where applicable.
  • Lead root cause analysis and corrective action efforts related to production, quality, and welding process issues.
  • Promote a culture of safety, accountability, technical excellence, and standardized work throughout the manufacturing organization.
  • Directly supervises Manufacturing Engineers and Certified Welding Inspectors (CWIs); scope includes Quality team support.
  • Responsible for hiring, training, coaching, and performance management of direct reports.
  • Provides work direction, sets priorities, and evaluates team performance against operational and quality goals.
  • May participate in compensation recommendations and disciplinary actions.

This position allows for growth and career progression to be determined by performance, certifications, and supervisor discretion.

  • Deep working knowledge of welding codes (AWS D1.1, D1.3, or equivalent) and their practical application on the shop floor
  • Ability to lead technical teams through ambiguous manufacturing challenges and drive durable solutions
  • Skilled in translating design requirements into manufacturable processes, tooling, and inspection criteria
  • Proficiency in manufacturing metrics, capacity analysis, and continuous improvement tools (PDCA, A3, 5-Why, FMEA)
