What does a welder do?

A welder is a skilled tradesperson who joins metal parts together using high heat and specialized equipment. They work with a variety of metals and techniques, such as arc, MIG, or TIG welding, to create or repair structures and components. Welders read blueprints, follow safety procedures, and inspect their work to ensure strong, durable welds. Their work is essential in industries such as construction, manufacturing, shipbuilding, and automotive repair.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a welder, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Welder, you need strong manual dexterity, technical welding knowledge, and typically a high school diploma or completion of a welding certification program. Familiarity with welding equipment, blueprints, and safety standards—as well as certifications such as AWS Certified Welder—are commonly required. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and dependability are important soft skills for ensuring quality and meeting project deadlines. These skills and qualifications are crucial for producing safe, precise welds and maintaining productivity in industrial and construction environments.

What are some common safety challenges welders face on the job, and how are they typically addressed?

Welders often encounter safety challenges such as exposure to intense heat, fumes, UV radiation, and the risk of burns or eye injuries. To address these hazards, employers typically provide personal protective equipment (PPE) like welding helmets, gloves, flame-resistant clothing, and proper ventilation systems. Safety training is also a regular part of the job, ensuring that welders are aware of best practices and emergency procedures. Adhering to these protocols helps maintain a safe work environment and reduces the risk of accidents.

What is the difference between Welder vs Fabricator?

AspectWelderFabricator
CertificationsWelding certifications (e.g., AWS, CWI)Welding certifications often required, plus blueprint reading
Work EnvironmentFactories, construction sites, shipyardsFactories, workshops, construction sites
Job RoleJoins metal parts through welding processesDesigns, cuts, and assembles metal structures
Tools & EquipmentWelding machines, torches, safety gearCutting tools, measuring devices, welding equipment

While welders focus primarily on joining metal parts through welding, fabricators handle the broader process of designing, cutting, and assembling metal components. Both roles often require welding certifications and share similar work environments, but fabricators typically have additional responsibilities related to blueprint reading and metal fabrication planning.

Job description

Railcar Repairman / Welder

Location: Loudon, Tennessee
Pay: $25.00 per hour
Job Type: Full-time, On-Site

Welding Experience Is Required

Road & Rail Services is hiring a Railcar Repairman / Welder in Loudon, Tennessee.

This is a hands-on repair position for someone who knows how to work with metal, tools, and equipment and is comfortable solving mechanical problems in an industrial environment. You will inspect railcars, identify damaged or worn components, and complete repairs needed to keep equipment safe and in service.

Railcar maintenance experience is a strong plus, but we are also interested in experienced welders and repair professionals from industrial maintenance, heavy equipment, fabrication, automotive, diesel, manufacturing, or similar skilled trades.

The most important thing is that you can weld and you know how to repair things.

What You'll Do

Your day will include a mix of inspection, welding, fabrication, mechanical repair, and general railcar maintenance.

Perform welding, cutting, grinding, fitting, fabrication, and mechanical repairs on railcars and related components
Inspect equipment for damage, wear, cracks, loose components, and other conditions requiring repair
Repair, replace, adjust, or secure railcar components using hand tools, power tools, pneumatic tools, and approved equipment
Complete repairs safely and accurately while following company, customer, railroad, and facility requirements

What We're Looking For

We need someone who is comfortable doing real repair work, not just assisting someone else.

Welding experience is required
Strong mechanical aptitude with hands-on repair, fabrication, or maintenance experience
Railcar maintenance or repair experience is preferred, but strong industrial repair experience will also be considered
Ability to work safely around heavy equipment, follow written repair procedures, and communicate clearly with supervisors and team members

The Work Environment

This is an active industrial position. You will spend your shift around rail equipment and may work outdoors in heat, cold, rain, wind, dust, and noise.

The job requires standing, walking, bending, climbing, crouching, reaching, and handling tools and materials throughout the day. Candidates must be able to wear required PPE and work overtime or weekends when operational needs require it.

Why Road & Rail Services?

Starting pay is $25.00 per hour.

Road & Rail Services offers medical, dental, and vision insurance, a 401(k) with company match, paid holidays and vacation, an annual steel-toe boot allowance, company-provided PPE, and opportunities for training and advancement.

About Us

Since 1987, Road & Rail Services has provided rail-related operations, maintenance, and logistics support throughout North America. Our teams support railroads, shippers, industrial facilities, and owners of rail equipment with a focus on safety, quality, and dependable service.

If you are an experienced welder who also knows how to troubleshoot, repair, and work with your hands, apply today for the Railcar Repairman / Welder position in Loudon, Tennessee.
