What does a Welder Project Manager do?

A Welder Project Manager oversees welding projects from start to finish, ensuring they are completed safely, on time, and within budget. They coordinate teams of welders, manage project schedules, procure necessary materials, and ensure compliance with safety and quality standards. Additionally, they may communicate with clients, resolve technical issues, and maintain project documentation. Their role combines technical welding knowledge with leadership and project management skills.

How does a Welder Project Manager typically coordinate between welding teams and other departments to ensure project success?

A Welder Project Manager plays a crucial role in bridging the gap between welding crews, engineering teams, and project stakeholders. They often hold regular meetings to discuss project timelines, address technical challenges, and ensure safety compliance. By maintaining clear communication channels and updating all parties on progress, they help prevent delays and resolve issues quickly. This collaborative approach not only streamlines workflow but also contributes to the overall quality and timely delivery of welding projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Welder Project Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Welder Project Manager, you need expertise in welding techniques, project management experience, and a background in engineering or construction, often with relevant certifications like AWS CWI or PMP. Familiarity with welding equipment, CAD software, and project management tools such as MS Project or Primavera is typically required. Exceptional leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills help manage teams, resolve site challenges, and coordinate with stakeholders. These skills ensure projects are completed safely, on time, within budget, and to quality standards.

Description
About Prime Machine, Inc.
Since 1979, Prime Machine, Inc. has been a leader in providing emergency industrial equipment repair, new component fabrication, and precision manufacturing services. We serve industries where downtime is not an option, including Mining, Power Generation, Aerospace & Defense, Oil & Gas, and other mission-critical sectors.
Over the years, we've expanded our capabilities to include:
  • Large and small machining services
  • Welding and fabrication
  • Gearbox repair and rebuilds
  • State-of-the-art laser inspection
  • Millwright and mechanical services

At Prime Machine, we are dedicated to quality, precision, and innovation. Our projects range from machining massive components to fabricating complex assemblies, all held to the tightest tolerances in the industry. We take pride in our role as a trusted partner to customers who rely on us for solutions to their most complex manufacturing and repair challenges.
About the Role - Project Manager
We are seeking an experienced Project Manager to join our manufacturing operations team. This role requires a highly skilled leader with a deep technical foundation in manufacturing or mechanical engineering, combined with advanced project management expertise.
The Project Manager will serve as the central coordinator for assigned manufacturing projects, ensuring they are scoped accurately, scheduled effectively, cost-controlled, and delivered to exceed customer expectations.
In this position, you will:
  • Act as the technical representative to customers, providing confidence in Prime's ability to understand and deliver on their requirements.
  • Lead proposal development, including RFP review, cost estimating, and preparation of complete project documentation.
  • Oversee project planning and execution, creating routers and work instructions that define methods, materials, quality standards, and schedules.
  • Manage project performance by comparing progress against established cost, schedule, and quality goals - and implementing corrective actions when needed.
  • Collaborate with machining, welding, fabrication, and quality teams to resolve technical challenges and maintain project momentum.
  • Negotiate contract terms, pricing adjustments, and change orders with customers as projects evolve.
  • Ensure compliance with all contract requirements, quality standards, and industry specifications.
  • Build and maintain long-term customer relationships, representing Prime Machine's capabilities and reputation for excellence.

This role is ideal for a high-caliber project leader who thrives in a fast-paced manufacturing environment where precision, accountability, and technical expertise are critical to success.
Requirements
Must-Have:
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a closely related field.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification with demonstrated application in manufacturing environments.
  • 7-10 years' experience in project management within a manufacturing or industrial setting.
  • Strong knowledge of machining, welding, fabrication, and mechanical systems.
  • Proven success managing complex, multi-phase projects with tight tolerances and high customer expectations.
  • Deep understanding of manufacturing processes, cost estimating, scheduling, and quality systems.
  • Advanced skills in contract management, including terms review, negotiations, and compliance.
  • Strong computer proficiency in project management, ERP, scheduling, and reporting tools.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and negotiation skills, with the ability to influence cross-functional teams and build strong customer relationships.

Preferred:
  • Experience in industries served by Prime Machine, such as Mining, Power Generation, Aerospace & Defense, Oil & Gas, or Hydro.
  • Familiarity with geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) standards and application to manufacturing.
  • Hands-on background in machining or fabrication, with the ability to support technical problem-solving.
  • Exposure to lean manufacturing practices, continuous improvement, or Six Sigma methodologies.
