How much do welder job jobs pay per hour?

As of Jul 7, 2026, the average hourly pay for welder job in the United States is $22.26, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $18.75 and $24.76 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Welder, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Welder, you need strong manual dexterity, technical understanding of welding processes, and often a high school diploma or equivalent with welding certifications. Familiarity with equipment such as MIG, TIG, and arc welders, as well as safety systems like PPE and blueprint reading software, is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving, and reliability are crucial soft skills for producing high-quality work and maintaining safety. These skills and qualities are vital to ensure precision, structural integrity, and safety in fabrication and repair tasks.

What does a welder do?

A welder is a skilled tradesperson who joins metal parts together using various welding techniques, such as arc, MIG, TIG, or gas welding. Welders work on construction sites, manufacturing plants, shipyards, and a variety of other industries that require strong, permanent metal bonds. Their responsibilities include interpreting blueprints, preparing materials, operating welding equipment, and ensuring the quality and safety of the finished products. Attention to detail and adherence to safety standards are crucial in this role.

Do welders make $100 an hour?

Welders can earn $100 an hour in specialized roles or high-demand industries, such as underwater welding or working in remote locations, but this is not typical for most welding jobs. The average hourly wage for welders generally ranges from $15 to $30, with experienced or certified welders earning higher wages. Factors like certifications, experience, location, and the complexity of the work influence earning potential.

What welding jobs pay $50 an hour?

Welding jobs that pay $50 an hour typically include roles such as pipe welders, underwater welders, and industrial welders with specialized skills and certifications. These positions often require experience, high-demand skills, and working in challenging environments or remote locations.

What is the highest paid welder job?

The highest paid welding jobs typically involve specialized skills such as underwater welding, pipeline welding, or working in the oil and gas industry, often requiring certifications like Certified Welding Inspector (CWI). These roles can offer salaries exceeding $100,000 annually, especially for experienced welders working in hazardous or remote environments. Advanced certifications and experience in high-demand sectors tend to increase earning potential for welders.

What are some common challenges welders face on the job, and how can they be addressed?

Welders often encounter challenges such as working in confined or awkward spaces, exposure to fumes, and the need for precise attention to detail to ensure strong, safe welds. Addressing these issues involves following safety protocols, using personal protective equipment, and continuously improving technical skills through training. Collaboration with team members, such as fitters and inspectors, is also essential to ensure projects meet quality and safety standards.

What is the difference between Welder Job vs Fabricator Job?

AspectWelder JobFabricator Job
CertificationsWelding certifications (e.g., AWS)Welding certifications often required, plus blueprint reading
Work EnvironmentFactories, construction sites, shipyardsWorkshops, manufacturing plants, construction sites
Job FocusJoining metal parts through weldingDesigning, cutting, assembling metal structures
Tools & EquipmentWelding machines, torchesCutting tools, measuring devices, welding equipment

While both Welder and Fabricator jobs involve working with metal and require welding skills, welders primarily focus on joining metal parts through welding processes. Fabricators design and assemble metal structures, often using welding as part of their work. Certifications and work environments overlap, but the roles differ in scope and responsibilities.

Can you make $300,000 as a welder?

While most welders earn significantly less than $300,000 annually, highly experienced welders working in specialized fields such as underwater welding, pipeline construction, or in remote locations can potentially reach or exceed this income level. Achieving such earnings typically requires advanced skills, certifications, and often working long or hazardous hours.
