These roles typically involve working under the supervision of experienced welders, assisting with basic tasks, and gradually taking on more complex welding assignments as skills improve. Training may include learning about different welding techniques, safety procedures, and the use of welding equipment. This position is ideal for those new to the trade and seeking hands-on experience before advancing to higher-level welding roles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a welder in training, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Welder In Training, you need a basic understanding of welding techniques, safety protocols, and the ability to read blueprints, often supported by a high school diploma or vocational coursework. Hands-on experience with welding equipment such as MIG, TIG, or arc welders and familiarity with safety gear are typically required. Attention to detail, strong work ethic, and willingness to learn are important soft skills that help you stand out. These skills and qualities are crucial for producing high-quality welds, maintaining safety standards, and progressing effectively in a skilled trades career.

Job description

WELDER, MASTER KEMTF, Test Site C-74, Eglin AFB Open Position Request Number R-80-26 CLASSIFICATION : Welder, Master ; CBA Rate $34.65/Hr GRADE: Non-Exempt; Regular Full-time LOCATION: Range Services, Eglin AFB FL POSTING DATE: Internal Applicants (08/04/2026) / External Applicants (08/10/2026) ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The Master Welder applies accepted trade methods to weld commonly used metals and alloys as well as recently developed or experimental metals and alloys with welding properties that are not fully known. The Master Welder routinely modifies welding procedures and recommends the most suitable metals and alloys for new or prototype applications. Master Welders apply an unusually high degree of skill to make welds that must pass very high standards of radiographic examination to ensure that piping systems and pressure vessels such as boilers can meet extreme operational requirements. For example, such welding may be required on piping systems that carry gases or liquids that are extremely volatile or lethal, at pressures above 150 pounds per square inch, or at temperatures over 650 degrees Fahrenheit. GENERAL DUTIES: * Master Welders apply in-depth knowledge of welding principles and skills to meet the most difficult requirements. * When welding with experimental base metals, electrodes, filler metals, fluxes, and shielding, the Master Welder considers elements such as arc stability, degree of penetration, surface tension, and viscosity of the flux and shielding slag to determine adequacy of the welding performance. * In comparison with lower-level welders, the Master Welder applies a greater degree of manual skill and a higher level of concentrated attention for prolonged periods of time to weld piping systems and pressure vessels, such as boilers, that must meet critical requirements. * Master Welders use special techniques such as mirrors to observe the welding site when access if difficult because of obstructions or other space limitations and blocking methods to prevent distortion when there are problems of uneven heat dissipation. * They also apply more skill in constantly changing the "angle of attack" (welding position and electrode angle) while welding, in completing welds from one side only (with no possibility of back gouging the weld root to remove defects. * Master Welders work independently on the basis of oral or written instructions from supervisors, engineers, or scientists, and from blueprints, sketches, drawings, work orders, or other specifications which indicate the requirements to be met. * Master Welders may modify details of shielding procedures, make trial welds to select the best welding process for new applications, and recommend changes in joint design or in the base metals to be used. * The Master Welder performs non-supervisory work, welding metals and alloys. * The job requires knowledge of electric, gas, and other welding processes such as arc gouging, and the skill to apply these processes in prototype manufacturing, repairing, modifying, rebuilding, and assembling various types of metal and alloy parts, equipment, systems, and structures such as buildings and targets. Job Requirements OTHER DUTIES: Other functions include planning and providing guidance or instructions to lesser skilled personnel. May be required to handle hazardous material and/or collect hazardous waste. May be required to have a Class "A" CDL. Will be required to work with the Target Crew during mission setup. Supports E-OMS operational objectives; observes company Quality, Safety, Environmental, Security and Administrative policies; supports Process Improvement. EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: Incumbents must have either: Formal training in welding acquired through vocational or military service school training or a certified apprenticeship program and 10 years of welding experience or, 15 years of applicable welding experience. May be required to be certified in various types of welding techniques and materials. OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Eye protection must be worn. May be required to handle hazardous material and/or collect hazardous waste. May be required to perform housekeeping duties. May be required to work overtime, weekends, and Holidays. Will be required to support other job-related tasks. Must be capable of lifting or shifting heavy items to complete work. Must be eligible to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance. Sled Track experience is HIGHLY DESIRABLE. WORK ENVIRONMENT: May perform work assignments in a temperature and humidity-controlled environment. Some tasks and assignments such as the installation; operation; and maintenance of mobile systems, aircraft systems, or range instrumentation will require work performance in outside environments in heat or cold with exposure to the conditions typical of various work locations. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Must be capable of lifting or shifting heavy items to complete work. Note: The above statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by individuals assigned to this classification. They are not intended to be interpreted as a comprehensive inventory of all duties, responsibilities and qualifications required of employees assigned to this position.
