Weekends Cnc and Weekends Machinist roles share similar work environments and industry applications. Both roles are essential in manufacturing settings and often require technical training or certifications.

What does a Weekends CNC operator do?

A Weekends CNC operator is responsible for operating and maintaining Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machines during weekend shifts. Their duties typically include setting up machines, loading materials, monitoring production runs, and ensuring the quality of manufactured parts. They may also perform routine maintenance and troubleshoot minor issues with the equipment. Working on weekends often allows companies to maintain production schedules and meet deadlines.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Weekend CNC Operator, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Weekend CNC Operator, you need a solid understanding of CNC machining, blueprint reading, and basic math, often supported by a high school diploma or technical certification. Familiarity with CNC programming software (such as G-code), machine setup, and measurement tools is essential. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and reliability are important soft skills for maintaining product quality and meeting deadlines. These skills ensure safe, efficient machine operation and consistent production output during weekend shifts.

What are some common challenges faced when working weekend shifts as a CNC operator?

Weekend CNC operators often encounter challenges such as working with limited on-site support, as fewer team members and supervisors may be available during these shifts. This requires a strong sense of independence and troubleshooting skills when unexpected machine or programming issues arise. Additionally, balancing work-life commitments can be more demanding, but weekend shifts may offer opportunities for overtime pay or a more flexible weekday schedule. Collaboration with weekday teams through detailed shift handovers is essential to ensure smooth workflow and minimize errors.

Why This Role Exists

Topeka Foundry & Iron Works has been machining critical industrial components since 1876 — making it the longest-running machine shop in Kansas.

As production demand continues to grow and the company invests in modern CNC technology, TFI is expanding its machinist team. This role exists to support increased machining capacity across multiple shifts while maintaining the quality and craftsmanship that built the company’s 149-year reputation.

This is a long-term, stable opportunity — not a temporary production spike.

What You’ll Be Doing

In this role, you will:

  • Operate CNC mills, lathes, grinders, and other precision equipment
  • Adjust feeds, speeds, tooling, and offsets to maintain tight tolerances
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings and blueprints
  • Perform in-process and final inspections using precision measuring tools
  • Work with Mastercam programs and utilize Vericut for verification
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized workstation
  • Support preventative maintenance activities

This is a hands-on machining role in a real production environment — not button-pushing.

What We’re Looking For

  • 1+ year of CNC machining experience
  • Ability to read blueprints and technical drawings
  • Understanding of G-code and CNC tooling concepts
  • Comfortable using micrometers, calipers, and inspection tools
