Overview

The Retreat Facilitator Weekend is responsible for the constant supervision, safety, and positive development of both adolescent (ages 5-17) and adult campers enrolled in high-adventure programming. The Retreat Facilitator Weekend leads engaging activities and discussions, strictly enforcing all safety protocols and camp policies, and serving as a positive, approachable role model. This includes planning and leading diverse activities such as archery, climbing wall sessions, nature hikes, crafts, marksmanship, and canoeing, while maintaining a strong focus on excellent customer service to ensure a positive and memorable experience for all campers. The Retreat Facilitator Weekend must be available and responsive at all times to address immediate camper needs, emergencies, or unforeseen situations. The Retreat Facilitator Weekend ensures the camp environment remains welcoming, genuine, and nurturing for all campers and guests while actively contributing to a strong, supportive staff team.

Schedule:

Must be available 2-3 weekends per month

Responsibilities

• Plans and prepares all assigned activities in advance, ensuring materials are ready, areas are safe, and the session meets established learning or recreational goals.
• Ensures the safe and proper use of all necessary group equipment by both staff and participants throughout recreational activities, verifying adequate supply levels at all times.
• Teaches, models, and enforces the "Leave No Trace" principles to ensure environmental stewardship and minimal impact on natural resources.
• Provides support to campers with a warm, approachable demeanor.
• Provides constant and direct supervision of campers in all camp areas across all activities, transitions, and meals times.
• Adheres to and actively models all safety protocols, operating procedures, and emergency response guidelines established by the camp and industry standards.
• Serves as an approachable role model, consistently upholding and demonstrating positive behavior, regardless of environmental or logistical challenges.
• Promotes and maintains a positive, inclusive, and nurturing environment that celebrates individual achievements and fosters a genuine sense of belonging among all camper and guests.
• Demonstrate a strong sense of investment in the camp, including maintaining the cleanliness of facilities, ensuring the proper care and inventory of equipment and supplies, and practicing stewardship of the natural environment; participates in various general camp chores, which may include cleaning assigned cabins and bathrooms, assisting with evening programs, special events, and contributing to larger projects as requested by the Program Director.
• Provides daily communication with the Program Coordinator or designated leadership regarding daily unit status, program milestones, and any critical observations or incidents requiring administrative attention.
• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Formal education, usually obtained by a High School Diploma/GED, or training that ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance AND,
• Must be at least 18 years of age or older and have obtained a high school diploma or GED.
• One or more years' experience working with teens in the Day Camp, Resident Camp or like setting.
• Good customer service and communication skills
• Physical ability to lead and interact in group activities and perform related physical skills including standing, hiking and/or climbing for extended periods of time.
• Visual and auditory ability and physical capacity to quickly identify, assess, and respond effectively to critical incidents and emergencies.
• Physical ability to lead and interact in group activities and perform related physical skills including standing, walking, hiking, and/or climbing for extended periods of time, often outdoors in various weather conditions.
• Excellent customer service, verbal communication skills, and a warm, approachable demeanor when interacting with campers, parents/guardians, and community members.
• Proven ability to mediate and de-escalate interpersonal conflicts within children ages 13-17, employing coaching techniques to maintain a positive team environment.
• CPR/AED, and First Aid Certification, must include Adult and Child/Infant, obtained within 30-days of hire and must be from one of the following certifying organizations:
  • American Red Cross
  • American Heart Association
  • American Safety & Health Institute
