Millwright – Power Plant

Job Summary

Provide skilled mechanical maintenance support to ensure the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of equipment within an electrical generating power plant. The Millwright is responsible for installation, inspection, preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of rotating and stationary power plant equipment in compliance with safety, environmental, and operational standards .

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Recognize safety hazards and strictly follow all safety procedures to protect self, coworkers, contractors, and the public.
  • Comply with all environmental rules and regulations and apply them effectively to daily work activities.
  • Install, inspect, maintain, test, troubleshoot, and repair power plant mechanical equipment including:
    • Boilers, steam and gas turbines, generators
    • Pumps, compressors, condensers, heat exchangers
    • Valves, piping systems, pressure vessels, and auxiliary equipment
  • Perform precision work such as:
    • Replacing bearings, seals, packing, sleeves, seats, and couplings
    • Shaft alignment, rigging, and equipment setting
  • Diagnose mechanical equipment failures and perform corrective repairs or recommend major repairs as required.
  • Perform preventative and predictive maintenance activities to maximize equipment reliability.
  • Assist in outage work, forced maintenance, and emergency response situations.
  • Work with apprentice mechanics and skill enhancement employees, providing guidance on safe work practices and proper tool use.
  • Coordinate with Operations, Electrical, I&C, and contractors/vendors to support plant activities.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records, work orders, and documentation.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned to support plant operations.

Working Conditions

  • Work in a power plant environment both indoors and outdoors in all weather and temperature conditions, in accordance with Heat Stress procedures.
  • Work around large rotating machinery, energized electrical equipment, high-noise areas, confined spaces, and elevated work areas exceeding 150 feet.
  • Ability to climb ladders, stairways, scaffolding, and operate aerial devices.
  • Must be available for rotating shifts, overtime, weekend work, and emergency callouts 24/7.
  • Work with hazardous and non-hazardous materials in accordance with the Waste Management Guidance Manual.
  • Must wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), including steel-toed boots, respirators, hearing protection, goggles, and safety glasses.
  • Ability to discern colors and respond to verbal and audible signals.
  • Employee must provide reliable transportation and may be reassigned to other company locations.
  • Limited travel may be required for training or inter-plant support.

Minimum Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 2 years of millwright experience in inspection, repair, and maintenance of pumps, turbines, engines, or auxiliary equipment
    OR
    2 years of heavy-industry machine shop experience including preventative maintenance, diagnostics, troubleshooting, and fabrication.
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in a power generating, chemical, or manufacturing environment.
  • Valid State Driver’s License.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate degree or completion of a recognized millwright apprenticeship.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to prepare maintenance reports.
  • General knowledge of environmental regulations and compliance requirements.
  • Basic computer skills including Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Additional Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.
  • Proficient in the use of hand and power tools.
  • Ability to operate forklifts, mobile cranes, and company vehicles (required licenses/certifications maintained).
  • Knowledge of rotating equipment, rigging, alignment, and industrial maintenance practices.
  • Ability to operate oxy-acetylene cutting equipment and perform welding (arc and gas); ability to qualify as a code welder with training.
  • Ability to operate machine shop equipment (lathes, drill presses, boring mills).
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, drawings, and work instructions.
  • Proficient in basic math, geometry, and use of precision measuring instruments.
  • Ability to perform lockout/tagout per East Energy procedures.
  • Ability to perform plumbing, pipefitting, insulation removal/replacement, and fabrication tasks.
  • Ability to order materials, maintain inventory, and keep work areas clean and organized.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to walk, stand, kneel, crouch, squat, twist, push, pull, climb, shovel, and work with tools above/below shoulder level.
  • Ability to lift and carry tools and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds in awkward positions.
  • Ability to swing sledgehammers, pull chain-falls or come-a-longs, and work in physically demanding conditions.
  • Ability to twist body and neck while driving company vehicles or operating equipment.

Work Schedule

  • Typically 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday
  • On-call, weekend, holiday, and overtime work required as needed
