Job description

The Terminal Supervisor is responsible for the day-to-day oversight of all operations within the facility. Positioned between the Assistant Terminal Manager and the Transload Crew Lead, the Terminal Supervisor serves as the operational leader of the transloading department. This role is focused on ensuring that transloading processes and procedures are followed correctly; all required inspections, and paperwork are completed accurately and on time; and critical decisions regarding efficiency, labor utilization, and equipment use are made in real time. The Terminal Supervisor works closely with the transload crew to ensure proper crew direction and production goals are met safely and efficiently.
Duties and Responsibilities
Operations Management
  • Oversee all transloading operations during the assigned shift, ensuring safe and efficient unloading of railcars and loading of trucks
  • Monitor and enforce adherence to established transloading processes and standard operating procedures
  • Make real-time decisions regarding efficiency, labor allocation, and equipment use to meet production targets and minimize delays
  • Evaluate pull rates and determine the number of equipment and resources needed to manage truck and rail traffic effectively
  • Identify and address operational bottlenecks or inefficiencies
  • Coordinate with the Transload Crew Lead to ensure crew assignments and break schedules are properly managed
  • Any other duties as assigned by the Assistant Terminal Manager or Terminal Manager
Inspections & Compliance
  • Verify that all required equipment inspections, railcar inspections, daily logs, and operational paperwork are completed accurately and on schedule
  • Ensure proper PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) is worn by all personnel at all times
  • Ensure good housekeeping practices are maintained throughout the transloading area
  • Assist with incident reporting and investigations related to transloading operations
Communication & Coordination
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for transloading operations during the shift
  • Communicate production status and any delays to customer service and management
  • Coordinate with rail crew regarding productivity and diminishing product types
  • Communicate action plans and operational priorities to the Transload Crew Lead at the start of each shift
  • Maintain clear and consistent communication with the Assistant Terminal Manager regarding staffing needs, equipment issues, and operational performance
  • Support a positive safety culture by leading by example and actively reinforcing safe work practices
Key Requirements
  • 1-3 years of experience in terminal, rail, or transloading operations
  • 1-3 years supervisory or crew lead experience
  • Experience in liquid hazmat or bulk material handling preferred
  • Strong understanding of transloading processes and equipment
  • Ability to make sound operational decisions in a fast-paced environment
  • Must be willing to work day shift, night shift, weekends, or holidays as needed
  • Must wear appropriate personal protective equipment including FR uniforms, respirator, hard hat, steel toe boots, and safety glasses
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Basic computer skills and experience with Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Basic math skills (adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing)
Must be physically able to do the following:
  • Ability to work at various heights up to 50' with fall protection equipment and up to 150' within railed platforms, including on locomotives, railcars, and other equipment.
  • Physical capability to perform unassisted tasks such as climbing, bending, lifting (up to 50 lbs unassisted), and prolonged sitting, standing, kneeling, and squatting throughout the course of a shift.
  • Work, walk, and stand on uneven ballast surfaces for long periods of time, up to 12 hours a day.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions and at extreme heights.
