Job description

I. Summary

            Title: Stagehand

            Reports to: Director of Production

            Status:  Part-Time Hourly, Non-Exempt

         

     II.   Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Stagehands support back of house operations in all activities needed to provide a positive experience for all musicians, guest artists, external clients, vendors, and internal departments. They are responsible for the operation of audio, lighting, video, rigging and other theatrical equipment. This position assists with the maintenance of theatrical systems used in support of stage productions, meetings and related events at Schermerhorn Symphony Center.

  • Installation and disassembly of concert and event productions
  • Load and unload production trucks
  • Assemble event production and concert equipment 
  • Perform construction of set pieces and other necessary items for events and concerts
  • Assist with theatrical and event equipment, during and after events and concerts
  • Move furniture and necessary equipment; assist with general hall maintenance and repair 
  • Ensure proper safety at all times
  • Server as an Electrician, Spot Op, LX Board Operator, or LX Board Programmer
  • Serve as a Stage Manager, Deck Hand, Carpenter, or Runner
  • Server as a Video Technician, Operator, Programmer or Digital Projectionist

III.   Work Requirements and Qualifications

            1.   Education

Minimum Requirement: High School or GED equivalent

            2.   Experience

Minimum 1-year related experience as a theatrical stagehand, event technician or in a similar role within concert production services.

            3.   Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Understanding of live performance dynamics, with hands-on experience in concert staging, sound reinforcement, audio recording, theatrical lighting, video and projection technologies
  • Committed to maintaining confidentiality, balancing tasks with varying urgency effectively, complemented by a good sense of humor and a broad perspective
  • Competent in embracing diversity through patient and empathetic engagement with individuals from diverse cultural and personal backgrounds
  • Flexible Schedule (days/nights, late/early hours, weekends, and holidays)
  • Must possess excellent customer service skills and hospitality mindset 
  • Must be able to lift up to 75 pounds
  • Possession of a personal vehicle and a valid driver’s license strongly desired 

            4.   Physical Demands

This position involves various physical activities essential to fulfilling job responsibilities. The role typically requires the ability to remain in a seated or standing position for extended periods. It also involves tasks that may require manual dexterity, such as using hands for handling tools or controls and reaching with hands and arms. Effective verbal communication and auditory capacity are vital.

There are occasional requirements to stand, walk, and to lift or move items, with accommodations made as needed for varying physical capabilities.
