Job description

Hancher Auditorium and the Office of Performing Arts & Engagement is seeking to hire a 100% full-time Production Manager.

Step into the spotlight at Hancher Auditorium, a university arts presenter on a thriving arts campus! As our Production Manager, you will serve as an expert production-focused facilitator between Hancher Auditorium and a range of constituents, including visiting artists and companies, faculty and student performers, production colleagues in the academic Performing Arts Production Unit, faculty/staff/student campus partners at-large, student production staff, union laborers, and community members.

In this role, you'll have the opportunity to:

  • Analyze, research and identify strategic needs, and allocate resources appropriately. 

  • Work with programming staff to determine viability of, plan for, and execute a range of performances and campus-focused artist residencies.

  • Determine communication plan for unit and oversee appropriate channels and frequency of communication to departments, support staff, faculty directors, guests.

  • Hire, develop and manage the performance of staff: ensure staff are compliant with UI policies and procedures.

  • Design and manage the system for mentorship and training of students who serve as essential staff for Hancher.

About the Department: Hancher is a 50+ year-old university arts presenter housed in a multifaceted facility (opened in 2016.) We present 80+ season events annually, support student performing arts productions, host institutional events like commencements and department celebrations, and serve the wider community. Our work builds toward the University of Iowa's overall performing arts vision and we are a key partner in the Performing Arts at Iowa collaboration between our academic departments (Dance, Music, Theatre Arts), academic production unit, and Hancher Auditorium. Hancher reports to the Office of Performing Arts and Engagement within the Office of the Provost. 

Required Qualifications:

  • A bachelor's degree in technical theatre or stage management, or equivalent combination of related education and experience is required; a master's degree is preferred. 

  • Demonstrates considerable (typically 3-5 years) experience in technical production including a practical knowledge of theatrical systems to include: lighting, performance sound, rigging and personnel management. 

  • Demonstrates considerable experience working in a multipurpose facility presenting events including Broadway, dance, theater, orchestra, chamber music as well as popular/commercial events. 

  • Demonstrates reasonable experience working with professional touring companies. 

  • Demonstrates reasonable experience in management. 

  • Demonstrates reasonable experience working with union laborers. Ability to work for extended periods of time standing, walking, lifting up to 50 pounds. 

  • Ability to work flexible hours including nights and weekends.

Competencies Required:

  • Demonstrates an extensive proficiency level in:

    • Demonstrates excellent written and verbal communication skills 

    • Demonstrates a history of excellent interpersonal and relationship building skills. 

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Experience working, scheduling, and negotiating agreement terms with professional stagehands union is highly desirable. 

  • Experience working within an educational institution.
